Stanton Welch
Stanton De Burgh Welch (born 1969) is an Australian dancer and choreographer. He is the artistic director of the Houston Ballet. Early life Welch was born in Melbourne to Marilyn Jones and Garth Welch, two prominent Australian dancers. Career Welch was initially trained at the dance school run by his parents. In 1989, after a year as a scholarship student at the San Francisco Ballet School, Welch was accepted into the Australian Ballet where he became a leading soloist. While with The Australian Ballet, Welch developed an interest in choreography and, in 1990, received his first commission. By 1995, he had been appointed a resident choreographer with the Australian Ballet and, in 2003, he was also appointed artistic director of the Houston Ballet. Houston Ballet, operated by Houston Ballet Foundation, is a professional ballet company based in Houston, Texas. The company consists of 59 dancers and produces over 85 performances per year. It is the 5th largest ballet company in the United States (by number of dancers). ''Sylvia'', originally ''Sylvia, ou La nymphe de Diane'', is a full-length classical ballet in two or three act (theatre), acts, first choreography, choreographed by Louis Mérante to music by Léo Delibes. The ballet's premiere took place on 14 June 1876 at the Palais Garnier, but was largely unnoticed by the critics. The first seven productions were commercially unsuccessful, but the 1952 revival, choreographed by Frederick Ashton, popularized the work. Productions in 1997, 2004, 2005, and 2009 productions were all based on Ashton's choreography. Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) is a non-profit international youth ballet and contemporary dance competition and scholarship program established in 1999.
