St. Patrick's College (SPC) ( ''Punitha Pattiriciyār Kallūri'') is a Education in Sri Lanka#Private schools, private school in Gurunagar, Jaffna, Sri Lanka. It was founded in 1850 by Roman Catholic missionaries. History The Jaffna Catholic English School was established in 1850 by Monsignor Orazio Bettacchini, an Italian Roman Catholic missionary. It was later renamed Jaffna Boys' Seminary before being registered as a high school and renamed St. Patrick's College on 10 January 1881. Rev. John Smythe, formerly of the Ceylon Civil Services, became its first Rector. Brother Conway's appointment as principal in 1862 coincided with increased enrolment. During this period, students achieved notable results in Sri Lanka's first local examinations. Rev. Gurunagar
Gurunagar () is a coastal village in Jaffna city in northern Sri Lanka. Gurunagar is also known as ''Karaiyur'' (). The suburb is divided into two village officer divisions (Gurunagar East and Gurunagar West) whose combined population was 3,520 at the 2012 census. The suburb is mainly populated by Catholic Sri Lankan Tamils, engaged in sea activities. The village is known in Jaffna due to its maritime history and also served as the western sector of the Jaffna Kingdom. Etymology Gurunagar, also spelled as ''Kurunagar'' derives its words from ''Kuru'' and ''Nagar'' (Urban centre in Tamil). The word ''Kuru'' is a clans name used by the Karaiyars also known as ''Kurukulam,'' who make up majority of Gurunagar. Leo Rajendram Antony
Leo Rajendram Antony (18 April 1927 − 3 December 2012) was a Sri Lankan Roman Catholic bishop. He studied at St Patrick's College, Jaffna St. Patrick's College (SPC) ( ''Punitha Pattiriciyār Kallūri'') is a Education in Sri Lanka#Private schools, private school in Gurunagar, Jaffna, Sri Lanka. He was ordained a priest in 1954 and served at the Nallur Mission and then was selected to serve the bishop of Trinco/Batticolo as his secretary. Later he returned to Jaffna and was appointed a director of the Rosarian Ashram in Thologatty. In 1966, he was appointed to the cathedral as a pastor and from there was chosen to be auxiliary bishop of Jaffna in 1968. Right Reverend Justin Bernard Gnanapragasam (; born 13 May 1948) is a Sri Lanka Tamil priest and the current Roman Catholic Bishop of Jaffna. Early life Gnanapragasam was born on 13 May 1948 in Karampon on the island of Velanaitivu in northern Ceylon. As a young boy serving as an altar boy at St Mary's Church, Kayts, that he showed signs of his vocation to become a priest. At the age of ten he conveyed his desire to his family that his ambition is to become a priest of a God and begged them continually to send him to the seminary. Uduvil Electoral District
Uduvil Electoral District was an electoral district of Sri Lanka between March 1960 and February 1989. The district was renamed Manipay Electoral District in July 1977. The district was named after the towns of Uduvil and Manipay in Jaffna District, Northern Province. The 1978 Constitution of Sri Lanka introduced the proportional representation electoral system for electing members of Parliament. The existing 160 mainly single-member electoral districts were replaced with 22 multi-member electoral districts. The Diocese of Jaffna () is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory or diocese of the Catholic Church in northern Sri Lanka. Latin Catholicism in the diocese's territory dates to the time of Francis Xavier. The current bishop is Justin Gnanapragasam. History The Apostolic Vicariate of Jaffna was created on 17 February 1845 from the Diocese of Ceylon. On 1 September 1886, it was promoted to a diocese. Right Reverend Jacob Bastiampillai Deogupillai (9 April 1917 – 25 April 2003) was a Ceylon Tamil priest and Roman Catholic Bishop of Jaffna. Early life and family Deogupillai was born on 9 April 1917 in Karampon on the island of Velanaitivu in northern Ceylon. He was educated at St Anthony's College, Kayts, and at St Patrick's College, Jaffna. He then studied at the Propaganda College. He later received a BA degree from the Ceylon University College and a Diploma of Education from the University of Ceylon. Career Deogupillai was ordained as a priest in Rome in December 1941. After returning to Ceylon he served as parish priest of Karaveddy. He taught for a while before becoming rector of St. Joseph's College, Anuradhapura. Burning Of Jaffna Public Library
The burning of the Jaffna Public Library (, ''Yāḻ potu nūlakam erippu''; Sinhala: යාපනය මහජන පුස්තකාලය ගිනිබත් කිරීම, ''Yāpanaya mahajana pustakālaya ginibat kirīma'') by an organized mob of Sinhalese individuals took place on the night of 31 May 1981. The library's burning was one of the most violent examples of ethnically motivated biblioclasm of the 20th century. Tissa Balasuriya ( Sinhala: තිස්ස බාලසූරිය) (August 29, 1924 – January 17, 2013) was a Sri Lankan Roman Catholic priest and theologian. He was educated at St Patrick's College, Jaffna. Theological work In 1971 Balasuriya founded the Center for Society and Religion; four years later he founded the Ecumenical Association of Third World Theologians. In 1990, Balasuriya published the book ''Mary and Human Liberation''. In 1994, the Sri Lankan bishops warned that the book included heretical content because it misrepresented the doctrine of original sin and cast serious doubts on the divinity of Christ.
