St Mary's Church, Ipswich
St Mary's Church is a heritage-listed Roman Catholic church precinct at Mary Street, Woodend, Ipswich, City of Ipswich, Queensland, Australia. It was built from 1874 to 1970s. It is also known as the former St Brigids Convent. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History The first Catholic church in Ipswich was established about 1849 on the corner of Mary Street and Elizabeth Street. It was made of slab and shingles. On 25 October 1858, Archbishop of Sydney John Bede Polding laid the foundation stone for a new stone church. The church was designed by William Holloway Chambers and built by John Petrie at a cost of £7000. The first mass was conducted on Sunday 4 December 1860 by Reverend W. McGinty. The consecration of the church had to await the arrival of the first Bishop of Brisbane, James Quinn and was performed by Cardinal James Freeman. The Queensland Heritage Register is a heritage register, a statutory list of places in Queensland, Australia that are protected by Queensland legislation, the Queensland Heritage Act 1992. It is maintained by the Queensland Heritage Council. As at 5 April 2020 there are 1790 places on the Queensland Heritage Register, including the Story Bridge in Brisbane and the Ross River Meatworks Chimney in Townsville. Criteria For a place to be entered in the register, it must be nominated and then go through a process of assessment. Patrick Francis Moran (16 September 183016 August 1911) was a prelate of the Catholic Church and the third Catholic Bishops and Archbishops of Sydney, Archbishop of Sydney and the first Cardinal (Catholicism), cardinal appointed from Australia. Early life Moran was born at Leighlinbridge, County Carlow, Ireland, on 16 September 1830. His parents were Patrick and Alicia Cullen Moran. ''The Catholic Press'' was a Sydney-based newspaper that was first published on 9 November 1895 and ran until 26 February 1942, after which it amalgamated with the Catholic ''Freeman's Journal'' and was reborn as ''The Catholic Weekly''. James Quinn, also known as James O'Quinn (17 March 1819 – 18 August 1881 ), was an Irish-Australian prelate of the Catholic Church and the first bishop of the Diocese of Brisbane. Early life Quinn was born at Rathbane (or Athy), County Kildare, Ireland, son of Matthew Quinn, a farmer, and his wife Mary ''née'' Doyle. Quinn had a classical and general education in Ireland before undertaking theological studies at the Irish College, Rome. The ''Darling Downs Gazette'' was a newspaper published from 1848 to 1922 in Drayton, Queensland, Drayton and Toowoomba in Queensland, Australia. History ''The Darling Downs Gazette and General Advertiser'' was founded in 1858 by Arthur Sidney Lyon. The first issue of four pages was published on Thursday 10 June 1858 from ''Willow Cottage'', a wooden shanty, in Drayton. After two years, it was purchased by W. H. Byers. Later, William Henry Traill was the proprietor for a brief period. While Drayton, being established in 1842, was the first substantial settlement on the Darling Downs, by the 1860s it was clear that it would be overtaken by nearby Toowoomba in size and importance, leading to Byers relocating the Darling Downs Gazette to Toowoomba in 1861.
