St Joseph's Technical School, Abbotsford
St Joseph's Technical School, Abbotsford traces its beginnings to the opening of St. Joseph's Primary School on the same site in 1893 and was operated in the tradition of the Christian Brothers as a school for boys. In 1930 its function changed to that of a technical school. The school was formally closed in 1990. School history 1892–1900 From its early beginnings as a primary school for boys the site was operated by the Christian Brothers following a tradition of rigorous teaching of both secular and religious subjects. At the first annual prize distribution night in December 1893 the local parish priest, Peter Kernan, complimented the boys, the staff and the Brothers, represented by Br O'Hagan, on the fine progress they were making. The education of girls in the local area was catered for by the Sisters of Charity, an order of nuns, who had opened St. Joseph's Primary School, Collingwood, just two years earlier. Stefan Hermann Haag OBE (26 March 192525 December 1986) was an Austrian- Australian singer; opera, theatre and television director and producer; lighting and set designer; and arts administrator. He was described as a “complete man of the theatre”. Biography Stefan Haag was born in Vienna. As a child he sang with the Vienna Boys Choir and Vienna Mozart Boys Choir. The choir found itself stranded in Australia at the outbreak of World War II in 1939, and he decided to stay. He sang baritone roles with the National Opera Theatre (possibly under the name Louis Waters) and later became a producer for the National Theatre Movement (1948–50). In 1950 he returned to Europe on a Victorian government scholarship to study arts production. In 1956 Stefan Haag became production director of the newly formed Elizabethan Theatre Trust Opera Company, the forerunner of Opera Australia. Len Murphy
Leonard Murphy (23 November 1909 – 20 December 1996) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Collingwood and Footscray in the Victorian Football League (VFL). His older brother Frank played beside him for much of his career. Football Murphy played mainly in the ruck and was a member of a Collingwood side which was a force in the VFL during the 1930s. They had just won a premiership when he joined the club and his debut season of 1928 saw them go back to back, with Murphy kicking two goals in their grand final win over Richmond. Collingwood won the flag again in 1929 and 1930 with Murphy a member of both premiership sides. He missed out on the 1935 premiership after being injured and again the following year due to suspension. At the end of 1937 he left the club and joined Nhill as captain-coach.
