St Alouarn Islands
St Alouarn Islands are a group of islands and rocks south-east of Cape Leeuwin in Western Australia, approximately 11 km south of Augusta, Western Australia, Augusta in Flinders Bay. History In March 1772, the crew of the French naval vessel ''Le Gros Ventre'', commanded by Louis Aleno de St Aloüarn, became the first Europeans known to have visited the islands. A few weeks later, at Dirk Hartog Island, St Aloüarn French Western Australia, formally claimed part of Western Australia for France. The islands were named after St Aloüarn in 1792, by Bruni d'Entrecasteaux, Antoine d'Entrecasteaux, as the leader of a subsequent French expedition. Location The Point Matthew lookout on the road between Augusta, Western Australia, Augusta and Cape Leeuwin has the islands identified in a brass compass plate that also identifies distances. Cape Leeuwin
Cape Leeuwin is the most south-westerly (but not most southerly) mainland point of the Australian continent, in the state of Western Australia. Description A few small islands and rocks, the St Alouarn Islands, extend further in Flinders Bay to the east of the cape. The nearest settlement, north of the cape, is Augusta. South-east of Cape Leeuwin, the coast of Western Australia extends much further south. Cape Leeuwin is not the southernmost point of Western Australia, with that distinction belonging to West Cape Howe, which is to the southeast, near Albany. In Australia, the cape is considered where the Indian Ocean meets the Southern Ocean, but most other nations and bodies define the Southern Ocean as existing south of 60°S. Edward Duyker (born 21 March 1955) is an Australian historian, biographer and author born in Melbourne. Edward Duyker's books include several ethno-histories – ''Tribal Guerrillas'' (1987), ''The Dutch in Australia'' (1987) and ''Of the Star and the Key: Mauritius, Mauritians and Australia'' (1988) – and numerous books dealing with early Australian exploration and natural science, among them biographies of Daniel Solander, Marc-Joseph Marion Dufresne, Jacques Labillardière, François Péron and Jules Dumont d'Urville. Personal and early life Edward Duyker was born to a father from the Netherlands and a mother from Mauritius. His mother has ancestors from Cornwall who emigrated to Adelaide, South Australia, in 1849, and he is related to the Australian landscape painter Lloyd Rees. The Ngari Capes Marine Park is a marine protected area on the lower south west coast of Western Australia, located approximately south of . The marine park was gazetted on and the park's western and southern boundaries are the limit of coastal waters of Western Australia, abutting the South-west Corner Marine Park located within the Australian Commonwealth exclusive economic zone.
