St. Richard's Church (Columbia Falls, Montana)
St. Richard's Church is a Gothic Revival architecture, Gothic Revival former Catholic Church, Catholic church located in Columbia Falls, Montana, United States, in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Helena, Diocese of Helena. St. Richard's was the first church in Northwestern Montana upon its completion in 1891. The clay used to make the bricks was sourced from the banks of the nearby Flathead River. The building served as Columbia Falls' first public school during the weekdays. After World War II the parish outgrew the church and moved to a larger building. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Today the building is privately owned. Gothic Revival (also referred to as Victorian Gothic, neo-Gothic, or Gothick) is an architectural movement that began in the late 1740s in England. Columbia Falls is a city along the Flathead River in Flathead County, Montana, United States. The population was 5,308 at the 2020 census. Columbia Falls has been ranked as one of the best and safest places to live in Montana. History The area that would become the city of Columbia Falls was first settled in 1891, in anticipation of the arrival of the Great Northern Railway. On April 26, 1909, the city of Columbia Falls was officially incorporated. The first residents requested the name "Columbia" for the U.S. Post Office, but the element "Falls" was ultimately tacked onto the name in order to avoid any confusion with the already-named Columbus, Montana.
