St. Philip's Church, Segamat
St Philip Catholic Church is a Catholic church located in the district of Segamat at the district capital of Segamat, Malaysia. It was built in 1924 and is the only Catholic church in the town. History St Philip Church Segamat was the first town in northern Johor to obtain a foreign Paris Foreign Mission Society member (MEP) to arrive and gathered around 300 faithful to form the first parish of St Philip. Fr. Jules Francois, the parish priest of the Church of St. Francis Xavier (Melaka) was in charge of the foundation of the parish since its inception. The first church of St Philip was built in 1924 for a total of 50 parishoners at a time. In 1955, the old church was converted into the parish hall located beside the present church, which was constructed by Fr. Segamat
The Segamat District () or simply Segamat is a List of districts in Malaysia, district in the Malaysian states of Malaysia, state of Johor. Segamat (town), Segamat is also the name of the district's primary town. Segamat district is one of the three landlocked districts in Johor, the other being Kluang District, Kluang and Kulai District, Kulai. Etymology It is believed that 'Segamat' is derived from the Malay language, Malay phrase '', which literally translates as 'very refreshing'. According to the local folklore, the phrase was uttered by a Bendahara during the Sultanate of Malacca upon drinking the water from the Segamat River. Segamat is a town and district capital located in Segamat District, Johor, Malaysia. History In the 16th century AD, Sultan Ahmad and his followers left Malacca because they were attacked by the Portuguese Malacca, Portuguese and settled in Pagoh. After being attacked at Pagoh they retreated with the aim of Penarikan and then downstream to Pahang. On the way to Penarikan in the middle of the road, by the riverbed, in a big wooden tree, Datuk Bendahara Paduka Tuan (The Treasurer of Melaka) sat leaning on the wooden banir facing the hollow in front of him, Sultan Ahmad and his father were not far from there, they together stopped being tired and rested for two days.
