St. Peter's Lutheran Church (Dell Rapids, South Dakota)
St. Peter's Lutheran Church is a historic church at 701 North Orleans in Dell Rapids, South Dakota. It was added to the National Register in 2002. St. Peter's congregation was first organized in 1887. The Romanesque Revival style church was built in 1902. The church was constructed of Sioux Quartzite The Sioux Quartzite is a Proterozoic quartzite that is found in the region around the intersection of Minnesota, South Dakota, and Iowa, and correlates with other rock units throughout the Upper Midwest, upper midwestern and Southwestern United ..., quarried locally. It was designed and constructed by the Paulson Brothers of Dell Rapids. In the year of 1918 the congregations of Stordahl and St. Peter's Lutheran Churches were combined. It was at this point that the name of the congregation changed to the Lutheran Church in Dell Rapids. Dell Rapids, South Dakota
Dell Rapids is a city in Minnehaha County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 3,996 at the 2020 census. It is known as "The Little City with the Big Attractions." The city took its name from the Dells of the Wisconsin River, which were likened to the local rapids on the Big Sioux River. History Dell Rapids was originally named Dell City, but was renamed after the rapids of the Big Sioux River. After a fire broke out on the main street and burned most of the town, it was rebuilt out of Sioux Quartzite, a common rock in the area. The Chicago, Milwaukee, and Saint Paul Railroad built a railroad into the area, reaching Dell Rapids from Egan in 1881. Two large Sioux Quartzite quarries owned by LG Everist are operated via this rail line, which is now operated by LG's subsidiary, the D&I Railroad. The community celebrates its heritage with the annual "Quarry Days" in July, and in June, the city hosts "Cootie Days", where rides and games are set up and available in th ... Sioux Quartzite
The Sioux Quartzite is a Proterozoic quartzite that is found in the region around the intersection of Minnesota, South Dakota, and Iowa, and correlates with other rock units throughout the Upper Midwest, upper midwestern and Southwestern United States, southwestern United States. It was formed by braided river deposits, and its correlative units are thought to possibly define a large sedimentary wedge that once covered the passive margin on the then-southern side of the North American craton. In human history, it provided the catlinite, or pipestone, that was used by the Plains Indians to carve ceremonial pipes. With the arrival of Europeans, it was heavily quarried for building stone, and was used in many prominent structures in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and shipped to construction sites around the Midwest.
