St. Matthew's Church, Ringsend
St. Matthew's Church, is a Church of Ireland church in Ringsend and Irishtown, Dublin, Irishtown in Dublin. History The church was originally built in calp limestone with granite dressings between 1704 and 1706. The tower was added after the initial main church building, around 1713. A notable feature is the broken pediment over the church door. The church was later remodelled by James Franklin Fuller in 1879. A marble floor was installed in 1890 to a design by Thomas Drew (architect), Thomas Drew. A pyramidal steeple was also added to the church in 1713, but this was removed following a storm in 1839. It was called the Royal Chapel of St Matthew, Ringsend from its foundation until 1871 because the Church of Ireland Archbishop of Dublin, Dr. William King (bishop), William King (1650–1729), wanted the government to pay for the church, which was built under an act of Queen Anne and later designated by George I. Ringsend () is a Southside (Dublin), southside inner suburb of Dublin, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. It is located on the south bank of the River Liffey and east of the River Dodder, about two kilometres east of the city centre. It is the southern terminus of the East-Link (Dublin), East Link Toll Bridge. Areas included in Ringsend are the south side of the Dublin Docklands, and at the west end is the area of South Lotts and part of the Grand Canal Dock area. Neighbouring areas include Irishtown, Dublin, Irishtown, Sandymount and the Beggars Bush, Dublin, Beggars Bush part of Ballsbridge to the south, and the city centre to the west. A key feature of the area is the chimneys of Poolbeg power station. Formerly the point where ships arriving from across the Irish Sea would dock, Ringsend went into decline in the 19th and 20th centuries, when the shipping moved to other locations, although there is still some container shipping.
