St. Mary Magdalen Church, Rectory, And Cemetery
St. Mary Magdalen Church is a historic Roman Catholic church at in Abbeville, Louisiana. In 1988 the church, along with the associated rectory and cemetery, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The cemetery was founded c. 1844, the present church was built in 1911; the American Foursquare-style rectory was built in 1921. The property added to the National Register in 1988. The church is a red brick Gothic-style cruciform basilica with buff-colored brick accents. It has Romanesque Revival details. Abbeville is a city in, and the parish seat of, Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, United States, west of New Orleans and southwest of Baton Rouge. The population was 12,257 at the 2010 census. At the 2020 population estimates program, the population of the city was 11,927. Abbeville is the principal city of the Abbeville micropolitan statistical area, which includes all of Vermilion Parish. It is also part of the Lafayette metropolitan statistical area and the larger Lafayette– Acadiana combined statistical area. } Joseph Verbis Lafleur (January 24, 1912 – September 7, 1944) was a Roman Catholic priest of the Military Ordinariate of the United States who died in the sinking of the and is in the preliminary stages for sainthood. Early life Lafleur was born in 1912 and grew up in rural Louisiana as one of seven children. His father abandoned his family and left his mother to raise their seven children. The mother took odd jobs and grew a garden to feed the impoverished family. Military service Lafleur volunteered to serve in the U.S. Army prior to World War II and was serving as a chaplain in the Army Air Corps at Clark Field, the Corps’ post in the Philippines when war broke out. He refused evacuation to safety and stayed with the soldiers under his care. He was captured in May 1942 and spent two years in several Japanese prisoner of war camps ministering to his fellow captives.
