St. Mary's Church, Falkland Islands
St. Mary's Church is a Roman Catholic church located at 12 Ross Road, Stanley, Falkland Islands. The church is the only pro-cathedral and parish of the Apostolic Prefecture of the Falkland Islands, an isolated territorial jurisdiction of the Catholic Church directly dependent on the Holy See. It is the only Catholic church in the islands. It is made of wood and was consecrated in 1899. On the West wall it has oil murals, illustrated by British artist James Peck, born in the islands. In September 1966, the hijackers of Aerolíneas Argentinas Flight 648 were granted sanctuary in the church by Father Rodolfo Roel (of Dutch origin) whilst they awaited deportation back to Argentina for trial. During the Falklands War in 1982, the parish priest Michael McPartland negotiated with the Argentine troops to continue holding Mass in English. There are over 230 Catholics in the Falkland Islands, approximately 10% of the total population. There are no dioceses in the islands, instead they form an apostolic prefecture which was erected in January 1952. It is immediately subject to the Holy See and separate from any Argentine or UK dioceses. The spiritual leader of the prefecture is Father Tom Thomas IC who was appointed in 2024. Michael McPartland
Monsignor Michael Bernard McPartland, S.M.A. (29 September 1939 – 6 April 2017) was a Roman Catholic priest who served as the Apostolic Prefect of the Falkland Islands and Ecclesiastic Superior of St. Helena, Ascension Island and Tristan da Cunha since 2002 until 2016. At the age of 15, McPartland left school and worked for five years as a salesman before joining the British Army in 1960, serving for eleven years after which he worked for British Rail. In 1973 he began formal studies for the priesthood with the Society of African Missions and was ordained on 14 May 1978. McPartland's first appointment was in the north of Nigeria where he served until 1982 when he returned to the United Kingdom. In 1998 he was sent to Nairobi, Kenya before he was appointed Apostolic Prefect of the Falkland Islands and Ecclesiastic Superior of St. Helena, Ascension Island and Tristan da Cunha by Pope John Paul II in August 2002.
