Yury Gelman
Yury Gelman (born October 13, 1955) is a Ukrainian-born American fencing coach. He is seven-time Olympic Games, Olympic fencing coach for the United States, who has coached Team USA in the 2000 Sydney, 2004 Athens, 2008 Beijing, 2012 London, 2016 Rio, 2020 Tokyo, and 2024 Paris Olympics, and US National Men's Sabre (fencing), Saber Coach. Through July 2024, he had coached 19 fencers who became Olympians, six of whom won Olympic medals. Gelman also served as coach of the Ukrainian Fencing Team from 1987 to 1991. He has also served as Head Fencing Coach for St. John's University (New York City), St. John's University for three decades, during which time he has coached 26 NCAA individual champions, and 140 All-Americans. Daryl D. Homer (born July 16, 1990) is an American right-handed saber fencer, three-time Olympian, and 2016 individual Olympic silver medalist. Homer competed in the 2012 London Olympic Games, the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Homer is a ten-time team Pan American champion and three-time individual Pan American champion. Personal life Homer was born on St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, to Juliette Smith and Daryl Homer. At the age of five, Homer moved to New York City with his mother and younger sister D’Meca, to an apartment on Gun Hill Road in the Bronx. Dagmara "Daga" Wozniak (; born July 1, 1988) is an American saber fencer. Wozniak was named to the U.S. Olympic team at the 2008 Summer Olympics in women's saber competition as a substitute, and as a competitor at the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics. As of the summer of 2016, she was ranked as one of the top 10 saber fencers in the world. Early life and education Her parents are Gregory and Irena Wozniak and she has an older sister, Zuzanna. She was born in Wrocław, Poland. When Wozniak was one year old, she immigrated to the United States with her parents. The family settled in Avenel, New Jersey, Wozniak's hometown. Jonathan Tiomkin (known as "Jon"; born July 12, 1979, in Brooklyn, New York) is an American Olympic foil fencer. Fencing career High school Tiomkin began fencing when he was a freshman at Hewlett High School in Hewlett, New York. NCAA Championships Fencing for St. John's University, Tiomkin won the bronze medal in foil at the 1999 NCAA Championships, and was a 1st-team All-American. In 2001 he came in 6th. He won the silver medal in 2002. National competitions Tiomkin won that national title in foil in 1999 and 2003, and placed second in 2004. Arlene Stevens (born February 20, 1981) is a retired American epee fencer. Stevens is lauded as "one of the most decorated fencers in program history," at St. John's University. NCAA Stevens competed while attending St. John's University, from 1999 to 2003. 4 time All-American fencer. Silver medalist at the NCAA Championships in 2001. Silver medalist at the Intercollegiate Fencing Association Championships. US Championships Stevens won the individual women's épée U.S. National Championship in both 1998 and 1999. Ivan James Lee (born March 31, 1981) is an American former Olympic sabre fencer and coach. He was a two-time NCAA Men's Sabre Champion, a five-time national sabre champion, and was inducted into the List of USFA Hall of Fame members, US Fencing Association Hall of Fame. He worked as a police officer in the New York City Police Department from 2008 until 2022, and as the Women's Fencing Team Head Coach at Long Island University from 2019 until December 2023. Fencing At The 2020 Summer Olympics
The fencing competitions at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo featured 12 events, the first time that both team and individual events have been held in all three weapons for both men and women. Originally scheduled for 25 July to 2 August 2020, the games were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and rescheduled to 24 July to 1 August 2021. Qualification There were 200 quota spots for fencing at the 2020 Summer Olympics. Qualification were primarily based on the Fédération Internationale d'Escrime (FIE) Official Ranking as of 4 April 2020, with further individual places available at 4 zonal qualifying tournaments. For the team events, 8 teams qualify in each event. Each team must be composed of at least 3 fencers. The top 4 ranked teams qualify.
