St. Antony's Church, Bommidi
St. Antony's Church is a Roman Catholic church situated in Bommidi, Dharmapuri district, Tamil Nadu, India. This church holds great prominence among the Christians, leading to its elevation as a Shrine by the Dharmapuri Diocese. History The history of Catholicism in Bommidi dates back to the late 19th century. During those days Mallapuram was a village presented next to the Bommidi village, Till now in government village revenue record the Mallapuram name is present. But Bommidi was expanded as town so the Mallapuram became one of an area of Bommidi and this name was no longer used. During the famine years between 1861 and 1864, Rev. Fr. Joseph Trione, a priest from Kovilur, visited Bommidi and provided assistance to the people during the crisis. As a result, nearly 98 individuals in Mallapuram (Bommidi) received baptism. Bommidi is a panchayat town which is located in Pappireddipatti taluka of Dharmapuri district in Tamil Nadu, India. It is also known as B. Mallapuram. Bommidi's name is used for the railway station, the police station situated at Nadur, the post office, and bus transportation, while the name "B. François-Jean-Marie Laouënan
François-Jean-Marie Laouënan (19 November 1868 – 29 September 1892) was a member of Paris Foreign Missions Society and was the archbishop of Archdiocese of Pondicherry. On 24 July 1868 he was appointed to succeed Bishop Joseph-Isidore Godelle as Vicar Apostolic of Pondicherry. He was consecrated as a bishop on 11 October 1868. When Pope Leo XII established Catholic hierarchy in India, Mgr. Laouënan was appointed as Archbishop of the same see on 25 November 1886. He was the Archbishop until his death on 29 September 1892. He was succeeded by Joseph-Adolphe Gandy. Early life Laouënan was born on 19 November 1822 in Lannion, Côtes-du-Nord.
