St. Anthony's Church, Lahore
St. Anthony's Church, Lahore, located 270 kilometers southeast of Islamabad is one of the oldest churches in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Lahore in Pakistan. History The church was consecrated in 1899. It was formerly called the "Railway Church." Father Andrew Francis was the pastor of St. Anthony's Parish until becoming Bishop of Multan in 2000, followed by Father Emmanuel Asi, one of the country's leading theologians. Father George Daniel was parish priest from 2004 from 2012 when Father Emmanuel Yousaf Manni replaced him. To improve relations between Christians and Muslims, the officials at St. Anthony's Church organized a Christian-Muslim meeting on November 19, 2005, and formed Christian-Muslim Rabita (cooperation) Society in Lahore. The Roman Catholic Metropolitan Archdiocese of Lahore is a Latin Metropolitan Archdiocese in Punjab province, Pakistan. Its episcopal seat is the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Lahore. History In 1594 the Mughal emperor Akbar invited some Catholic priests from Goa to stay permanently at his court. This group of Jesuit missionaries arrived in the Punjab and were able to build a church, where they celebrated Christian ceremonies, and receive adults into the Church. Andrew Francis (bishop)
Andrew Francis (29 November 1946 – 6 June 2017) was the Pakistani Catholic prelate who served as the Bishop of Multan from 2000 to 2014. Biography He was born in Adah, Pakistan on 29 November 1946. He was educated at St. Mary’s Convent school, Adah and St Francis High School, Lahore. He received his religious training at the Christ the King Seminary in Karachi. On 10 January 1972, he was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Lahore. He has been rector of Sacred Heart Cathedral, Lahore in 1986 and later Parish Priest of St. Anthony's Church, Lahore, until his ordination as bishop in February 2000. Lawrence John Saldanha (born 12 June 1936) is an Indian-born retired Pakistani archbishop. Born in Mangalore, India, he received his religious training at the Christ the King seminary in Karachi and was ordained a priest in Lahore, Pakistan on 16 January 1960. Biography He also earned a doctorate in systematic theology from Rome-based Pontifical Urbaniana University. He participated in the Second Vatican Council. He served in different parishes in Lahore. He served from 1971 to 1974 as editor of the Catholic Naqib, the Archdiocese's Urdu bimonthly.
