St. Andrew's Society Of Hong Kong
The St. Andrew's Society of Hong Kong (香港聖安度會) is a Scottish club in Hong Kong established in 1881. History In the early 19th century, Canton was the centre of China's foreign trade and the base of the foreign trading community. Several St. Andrew's Dinners, celebration of the St. Andrew's Day, were held during the 1830s in Canton. Being closely associated with the Jardine, Matheson & Co. which was established by the Scotsmen, the Scottish community were strong in Canton as well as Hong Kong, where the Jardine Matheson & Co. set up their headquarters and established their offices and accommodation at East Point after it was occupied by Britain in 1841. The St. Andrew’s Dinners were held at East Point from the 1850s until it was moved to the Hong Kong Club in Central, at that time located at the corner of Queen’s Road Central and Wyndham Street. Military Cross
The Military Cross (MC) is the third-level (second-level pre-1993) military decoration awarded to officers and (since 1993) other ranks of the British Armed Forces, and formerly awarded to officers of other Commonwealth countries. The MC is granted in recognition of "an act or acts of exemplary gallantry during active operations against the enemy on land" to all members of the British Armed Forces of any rank. Michael Herries
Sir Michael Alexander Robert Young-Herries OBE MC (28 February 1923 – 6 May 1995) was the chairman and managing director of Jardine Matheson & Co. from 1963 to 1970 and was the Chairman of The Royal Bank of Scotland from 1978 to 1991. Born in Scotland in the Dumfries and Galloway region, he was educated at Eton where he excelled in Classics and sports then later at Trinity College in Cambridge. While at Cambridge in 1942, his studies were interrupted by his service with the King's Own Scottish Borderers, serving in Europe, later on his regiment was transferred to the Middle East, in Egypt then in Palestine. Attaining the rank of Captain and awarded the Military Cross for gallantry in action, he returned to Cambridge in 1947 to continue his studies in Classics. Atholl Macgregor
Sir Alasdair Duncan Atholl MacGregor KC (4 June 1883 – 30 October 1945) was a British lawyer and judge. He served as Attorney General in a number of British colonies in the early 20th century. He was Chief Justice of Hong Kong from 1933 to 1945. MacGregor's given names MacGregor generally used the Christian name Atholl. In some sources it is spelt Athol. John Cecil Macgown
John Cecil Macgown was a Scottish doctor in Hong Kong and member of the sanitary board. Macgown went to Hong Kong and was the principal of the medical firm of Macgown, Anderson, and Durran and principal medical officer of China Underwriters, Ltd.. He was on the consulting staff of the Alice Memorial Hospital and affiliated hospital and member of the New Territories medical benevolent branch of the St. John Ambulance Brigade. Dr. Macgown served in the Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps, holding the rank of major in the medical section of the corps from 1914 to 1918 during the First World War. Andrew Lusk Shields
Andrew Lusk Shields (c. 1882 – 24 July 1944) was a Scottish businessman and politician in Hong Kong. He died as a prisoner of war following the surrender of Hong Kong in 1941. Life Shields was born in about 1882. He joined Shewan, Tomes & Co. and succeeded Robert Shewan as a partner of the firm. He was also chairman of the Sandakan Light and Power Co. and had been on the board of directors of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation. He was elected chairman of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce in 1938. He was an unofficial member of the Legislative Council from 1938 to 1941 as representative of the Chamber of Commerce and was appointed to the Executive Council in April 1941. John Johnstone (businessman)
John Johnstone (1881-1935) was a British businessman and rider. He was the tai-pan of the Jardine, Matheson & Co., member of the Shanghai Municipal Council and Legislative Council of Hong Kong. He was the head of the Jardine, Matheson & Co. as well as director of numerous companies. He was member of the Shanghai Municipal Council and the Legislative Council of Hong Kong. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. Charles Edward Anton
Charles Edward Anton (1860 – 16 November 1935) was a Scottish businessman who was the 16th tai-pan of the Jardine, Matheson & Co. and a member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong. Biography Anton was born in St Pancras, London, to Scottish parents George Anton, a merchant, and Mary Lindsay. He joined the Jardine, Matheson & Co. in 1884 and spent some time in the Shanghai office. He was authorised to sign ''per pro'' in 1904. In 1910, he was appointed a director and eventually retired in 1919. During 1917 when he was the director of Jardine he was also member of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce and the Legislative Council of Hong Kong. David Landale
David Landale (6 August 1868 – 6 September 1935) was the 13th Tai-pan of the Jardine Matheson & Co. and member of the Executive Council and Legislative Council of Hong Kong. Early life Born on 6 August 1868, Landale was the son of Rev. David Landale and Margaret Helen Hassels Jardine, daughter of Sir William Jardine, 7th Baronet, a distant relative of the founder of the prominent trading house Jardine Matheson & Co., William Jardine. He was educated at Fettes College, Edinburgh.
