Spreckels, California
Spreckels is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in the Salinas Valley of Monterey County, California, United States. Spreckels is located south of Salinas, at an elevation of . Its population was 692 at the 2020 census. Spreckels is one of the best-preserved company towns in the United States. It was built to house workers for the Spreckels Sugar Company plant, which operated there from 1899 until 1982, named after its founder "Sugar King" Claus Spreckels. When it opened, the Spreckels plant was the world's largest sugar beet factory, each day consuming of water—with much of it pumped from wells—to process of beets. Spreckels is associated with the writer John Steinbeck, who lived and worked there for a time, and used it as a setting in his novel '' Tortilla Flat''. The Spreckels Lake Model Yacht Facility, commonly referred to as "Spreckels Lake", is an artificial reservoir behind an earthen dam and adjoining clubhouse situated on the northern side of San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. Spreckels Mansion is a French Classical mansion located in the Pacific Heights neighborhood at 2080 Washington Street in San Francisco, California, built c. 1912-1913. The three-story mansion is in a French Baroque Chateau-style, designed by George Adrian Applegarth (1876–1972) and Kenneth A. MacDonald Jr. (of MacDonald & Applegarth firm), and built by businessman Adolph B. Spreckels. It is listed as city landmark No. 197. History Adolph B. Spreckels was the son of sugar tycoon Claus Spreckels; he had helped expand the sugar business to Hawaii and Salinas. Adolph married Alma de Bretteville on May 11, 1908; she was many years younger than he was. The property for the Spreckels Mansion was bought by Adolph as a Christmas gift for his wife Alma; they had been living in Sausalito. Spreckels Organ
The Spreckels Organ is a pipe organ that was designed by Ernest M. Skinner. It was installed in 1924 at the Legion of Honor (museum), Legion of Honor museum in San Francisco, California. Public performances are held on Saturdays, 4:00–4:45 pm. Philanthropy, Philanthropist John D. Spreckels commissioned the organ's manufacture. A commemorative plaque on the right side of the Organ console, console states: "John D. Spreckels has generously given the organ in this temple for the pleasure of those who, like himself, are lovers of music AD MCMXXIV." Spreckels donated the organ as a tribute to his brother Adolph B. Spreckels, Adolph, who was dying from syphilis. Adolph died before the organ was completed. Setting The organ is located in the museum's Auguste Rodin, Rodin gallery. The Spreckels Sugar Company is an American sugar beet refiner that for many years was the largest beet sugar producer in the western United States. The company was incorporated and originally headquartered in San Francisco, with its largest operation being its beet sugar refinery in the company town of Spreckels, California, Spreckels, near Salinas, California. It has operated seven more factory locations during its years of operations. As of 2025, the company is still in business as a sugar wholesaler to the food and beverage industry and is a wholly-owned division of the Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Cooperative (SMBSC). It has one remaining factory, located in the Imperial Valley town of Brawley, California, where the company is also headquartered.
