Spock's World
''Spock's World'' is a 1988 science fiction novel by American writer Diane Duane, set in the fictional ''Star Trek'' universe. The plot revolves around a movement on the planet Vulcan to secede from the United Federation of Planets. The book alternates chapters that advance the main plotline with chapters that relate important scenes from Vulcan's history, and much of the book explores underlying themes in Vulcan philosophy and culture, especially the idea of '' cthia'', a Vulcan philosophical (and possibly religious, depending on interpretation) concept translated in the book as "reality-truth — seeing things the way they really are, instead of the way we would like to see them". Diane Duane
Diane Duane (born May 18, 1952) is an American science fiction and fantasy author, long based in Ireland. Her works include the ''Young Wizards'' young adult fantasy series and the ''Rihannsu'' Star Trek novels. Biography Born in New York City, she grew up in Roosevelt, New York, Roosevelt, Long Island. After school, she studied nurse, nursing and practiced as a psychiatric nurse for two years until 1976, when she moved to California and worked as an assistant to David Gerrold. Her first novel was published by Dell (publisher), Dell Books in 1979; Gerrold wrote an "overture" to that novel, stating he'd rather be making overtures than introductions to Duane. She subsequently worked as a freelance writer. In 1981, she moved to Pennsylvania. She married Northern Ireland, Northern Irish author Peter Morwood in 1987; they later moved to the United Kingdom and then to Ireland, where they resided in Grangecon, County Wicklow. ''Strangers from the Sky'' is a novel, originally released in 1987, by Margaret Wander Bonanno. Overview The novel is an adventure involving the original Star Trek series cast and journeys through many eras of the Trek timeline. The story is presented as a book within a book featuring excerpts from a novel called ''Strangers from the Sky'' by fictional author Garamet Jen-Saunor which claims that the official records of how the Human and Vulcan races met for the first time were incorrect. The beginning and ending of the book takes place during James T. Kirk's years in the admiralty when he begins to suffer from psychological issues after reading Jen-Saunor's book which is a gift from Doctor McCoy. Kirk becomes somewhat obsessed with the story and starts to have disturbing dreams in which he is present during the book's events which, in the dreams, result in disaster. Acute radiation syndrome (ARS), also known as radiation sickness or radiation poisoning, is a collection of health effects that are caused by being exposed to high amounts of ionizing radiation in a short period of time. Surak is a fictional character in the backstory of the ''Star Trek'' television series and franchises. He is portrayed as the most important philosopher in the history of the planet Vulcan (Star Trek), Vulcan.
