Spiegel Scandal
The ''Spiegel'' affair of 1962 () was a political scandal in West Germany. It stemmed from the publication of an article in ''Der Spiegel,'' West Germany's weekly political magazine, about the nation's defense forces.. Several ''Spiegel'' staffers were detained on charges of treason, but were ultimately released without trial. The scandal stemmed from a conflict between Franz Josef Strauss, federal minister of defense, and Rudolf Augstein, owner and editor-in-chief of ''Der Spiegel''. The affair cost Strauss his office and, according to some commentators, put the post-war West German democracy to its first successful test of press freedom. Cause Strauss and Augstein had clashed in 1961, when ''Der Spiegel'' raised accusations of bribery in favor of the FIBAG construction company, which had received a contract for building military facilities. USS ''Spiegel Grove'' (LSD-32) was a of the United States Navy. She was named for Spiegel Grove, the home and estate in Fremont, Ohio, of Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th President of the United States. Career ''Spiegel Grove'' was laid down on 7 September 1954, by the Ingalls Shipbuilding Corp., Pascagoula, Mississippi, launched on 10 November 1955. She was sponsored by Mrs. Webb C. Hayes and commissioned on 8 June 1956. ''Spiegel Grove'' sailed for Hampton Roads and arrived at Norfolk, Virginia, on 7 July 1956. She headed for the Guantanamo Bay area on her shakedown cruise on 26 July 1956 and returned on 15 September. A spiegeltent (Dutch language, Dutch for "mirror tent", from ''wikt:spiegel#Dutch, spiegel''+''wikt:tent#Dutch, tent'') is a large travelling tent, constructed from wood and canvas and decorated with mirrors and stained glass, intended as an entertainment venue. Originally built in Belgium during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, only a handful of spiegeltents remain in existence and continuing to travel predominantly around Europe. Often as a feature attraction at various international arts festivals. Two tents used by Teatro ZinZanni have been in semi-permanent locations in Seattle and San Francisco for several years. It is about ten minutes long. Description The piece was originally written for a single piano and violin – though the violin has often been replaced with either a cello or a viola. A Spigelian hernia is the type of ventral hernia that occurs through the Spigelian aponeurosis, which is the part of the aponeurosis of the transverse abdominal muscle bounded by the linea semilunaris (or Spigelian line) laterally and the lateral edge of the rectus abdominis muscle medially. It is the protuberance of omentum, adipose tissue, or bowel in that weak space between the abdominal wall muscles, that ultimately pushes the intestines or superficial fatty tissue through a hole causing a defect. As a result, it creates the movement of an organ or a loop of intestine in the weakened body space that it is not supposed to be in. It is at this separation (aponeurosis) in the ventral abdominal region, that herniation most commonly occurs. David Martin (poet)
David Martin (22 December 1915 – 1 July 1997), born Lajos or Ludwig Detsinyi, into a Jewish family in Hungary (then part of Austria-Hungary), was an Australian novelist, poet, playwright, journalist, editor, literary reviewer and lecturer. He also used the names Louis Adam and Louis Destiny, adopting the name David Martin after moving to England. Biography Martin was born in Budapest, but educated in Germany. He left Germany in 1934, spending time in the Netherlands, Hungary and Palestine. In 1937 he travelled to Spain. where he served as a volunteer in the medical service of the International Brigade of the Spanish Republican Army during the Spanish Civil War. In 1938 Martin joined his father in London, working in his clothing factory, before moving to Glasgow in 1941 where he worked as a correspondent with the ''Daily Express''.
