Southside Johnny
John Lyon (born December 4, 1948), known professionally as Southside Johnny, is an American retired singer-songwriter who fronted the band Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. Southside Johnny has long been considered the Grandfather of "the New Jersey Sound." Jon Bon Jovi has acknowledged Southside Johnny as his "reason for singing." He is a member of the New Jersey Hall of Fame, Class of 2018. Biography Early days John Lyon was born in Neptune, New Jersey, and grew up in Ocean Grove, New Jersey. Stax Records
Stax Records is an American record company, originally based in Memphis, Tennessee. Founded in 1957 as Satellite Records, the label changed its name to Stax Records in September 1961. It also shared its operations with sister label Volt Records. Stax was influential in the creation of Southern soul and Memphis soul music. Stax also released gospel, funk, and blues recordings. The label was founded by two siblings, business partners Jim Stewart and Estelle Axton, whose last names formed the basis of the label's name (Stewart + Axton = "Stax"). ''Hearts of Stone'' is the third album by New Jersey rock band Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, released in October 1978. The album peaked at number 112 on the Billboard 200, ''Billboard'' 200 chart during the week of January 13, 1979. All of the album's songs were written by Southside Johnny, Bruce Springsteen, and E Street Band guitarist Steven Van Zandt. Van Zandt, the band's manager, also produced, arranged and played guitar. History Work on the album began in January 1978 at the Record Plant in New York City. After recording approximately eight songs (see "Outtakes" section below), both Southside Johnny and Steve Van Zandt felt that the material was not meeting their standards, and as a result temporarily abandoned the album sessions. ''I Don't Want to Go Home'' was the first album by New Jersey rock/R&B band Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. The work helped establish the basis of the Jersey Shore sound. It was produced and arranged by manager Steven Van Zandt, who also sang, played guitar, wrote the title song, and elicited the contribution of two compositions by Bruce Springsteen, who also wrote the liner notes. The album features two perennial standards for the band, Steve Van Zandt's "I Don't Want to Go Home" and " The Fever" by Bruce Springsteen. There were a number of guest artists and duets, a tradition that continued in their next album, ''This Time It's for Real''. Vini Lopez
Vincent Lopez (born January 22, 1949), nicknamed Mad Dog, is an American drummer. Between 1968 and 1974, he backed Bruce Springsteen in several bands, including Steel Mill and the E Street Band. He also played on Springsteen's first two albums, '' Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.'' and '' The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle''. Both during and after his time with the E Street Band, Lopez played drums with numerous Jersey Shore bands. In April 2014, Lopez was inducted by Springsteen into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the E Street Band. Garry Tallent
Garry Wayne Tallent (born October 27, 1949), sometimes billed as Garry W. Tallent, is an American musician and record producer, best known for being the bass player and a founding member of the E Street Band, Bruce Springsteen's primary backing band since 1972. As of 2025, Tallent is the only remaining original member of the E Street Band besides Springsteen. He was inducted in 2014 as a member of the E Street Band into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
