South Carolina Highway 9 (SC 9) is a major state highway in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The highway travels from Cherry Grove Beach to the North Carolina state line upstate. The highway is currently the longest state highway in South Carolina. It is signed as a north–south highway, even though it travels in an east–west direction. Route description SC 9 begins at the North Carolina-South Carolina border, where the road continues as NC 9. This is about northwest of Spartanburg. The road slowly heads southeast to Spartanburg. Five miles into its existence SC 9 intersects SC 11 and then later, SC 9 intersects SC 292. After this, SC 9 enters Boiling Springs. Finally, SC 9 enters the northeast section of Spartanburg and crosses over Interstate 85 and Interstate 585. Then SC 9 joins up with US Route 176. Interstate 585 (I-585) is a auxiliary Interstate Highway of I-85 in the US state of South Carolina. It is an orphan auxiliary route to I-85 since 1995 when the Interstate was relocated further north bypassing Spartanburg. In a concurrency with US Highway 176 (US 176) throughout, it spurs south from I-85 Business (I-85 Bus) for a couple of miles before entering Spartanburg. Route description I-585 is cosigned the entire length with US 176 and it uses US 176's exit number system instead of its own. The route is also signed as North Pine Street its entire length. The southern terminus begins at exit 25, where the road continues as US 176/South Carolina Highway 9 (SC 9). I-585 remains concurrent with US 176 starting at exit 25 as it heads northwest. Boiling Springs, South Carolina
Boiling Springs is a census-designated place (CDP) in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 8,219 at the 2010 census. Namesake The area became known as Boiling Springs because of a small spring in its heart that, up until the land was commercially developed, actually appeared as if it were boiling and would sometimes shoot water into the air. The geyser diminished gradually over the years. In the 1930s it had become a shallow, barely bubbling stream and today the water is still. The spring is located at the corner of McMillian Boulevard and Highway 9 on the same lot as the (formerly) Bi-Lo Shopping Center and the Verizon Mobile store. Once the land was developed and the shopping center was built, the springs ceased to boil. After the spring was cleaned up and dug out, a small park was built around it with benches, flags, and a memorial to a citizen of Boiling Springs. Route description SC 292 begins at an intersection with SC 290 (West Main Street) in Duncan, within Spartanburg County. It travels to the east-northeast, crosses railroad tracks, and curves to the northeast. It crosses over the Middle Tyger River and enters Lyman.
