Drachten (, ) is a town in the northern Netherlands. It is located in the municipality of Smallingerland, Friesland. It had a population of around 56.098 in 2023 and is the Friesland#Urban areas, second largest town in the province of Friesland. History Beginnings Drachten began as a small community on the east side of the Drait (or Dracht) river. There, early settlers started draining the land to use it for agriculture. As the process of draining progressed, residents began to move further eastward in order to use the drained land—former bog, peatbogs—for agriculture. Around 1200 A.D., a small stone church was built. It was used for 200 years afterward, until rising waters drove people even further east. By 1550 the Dutch peat reserve had been exhausted. The Grand Prix Adrie van der Poel is a cyclo-cross race held in Hoogerheide, Netherlands, which is part of the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup and normally the final World Cup race. The race is named after former cyclo-cross world champion Adrie van der Poel Adri van der Poel (born 17 June 1959) is a retired Dutch cycle sport, cyclist. Van der Poel was a professional from 1981 to 2000. His biggest wins included six classics, two stages of the Tour de France and the World Cyclo-Cross Championships in .... The Flandriencross is a cyclo-cross race held since 2002 in Hamme, Belgium, until 2013 it was known as the Bollekescross but was renamed in 2014 in honour of Greg Van Avermaet who was raised in Hamme and is a multiple times winner of the Flandrien of the Year award.
