''Softly, Softly'' is a British television police procedural series produced by the BBC and screened on BBC 1 from January 1966. It was created as a spin-off from the series ''Z-Cars'', which ended its fifth series run in December 1965. Softly, Softly (song)
"Softly, Softly" is a popular song originally written in French as "La tamise et mon jardin" Pierre Dudan. The song was given English lyrics in 1954 by BBC executive Robin Hugh Scutt (using the "Mark Paul" pseudonym) and entertainer Paddy Roberts. The most popular version of the song was recorded by Northern Irish singer Ruby Murray in January 1955. Produced by Norrie Paramor, it reached No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart for three weeks in February and March 1955. Other recordings were made in 1955 by Jaye P. Morgan and by Alma Cogan Alma Angela Cohen Cogan (19 May 1932 – 26 October 1966) was an English singer of traditional pop in the 1950s and early 1960s. The pottos are three species of strepsirrhine primate in the genus ''Perodicticus'' of the family Lorisidae. In some English-speaking parts of Africa, they are called "softly-softlys". Etymology The common name "potto" may be from Wolof (a tailless monkey). The generic name ''Perodicticus'' is composed of Greek (, ‘maimed’) and (, "able to show/indicate", cf. , , ‘index finger’). It refers to the stubby index finger that seems mutilated.
