A sofer, sopher, sofer SeTaM, or sofer ST"M ( he, סופר סת״ם, "scribe"; plural of is , ; female: ) is a Jewish scribe who can transcribe Sifrei Kodesh (holy scrolls), tefillin (phylacteries), mezuzot (ST"M, , is an abbreviation of these three terms) and other religious writings. By simple definition, soferim are copyists, but their religious role in Judaism is much more. Besides sifrei Torah, tefillin, and mezuzot, scribes are necessary to write the Five Megillot (scrolls of the Song of Songs, Book of Ruth, Book of Esther, Ecclesiastes, and Book of Lamentations), Nevi'im (the books of the prophets, used for reading the haftarah), and for , divorce documents. Abraham Isaac Sofaer (1 October 1896 – 21 January 1988) was a Burmese-born British actor who began his career on stage and became a familiar supporting player in film and on television in his later years. Life and career Although Sofaer was born in Rangoon, Burma (then a part of the British Empire), he was descended from Baghdadi Jews. Abraham David Sofaer (born May 6, 1938) is an American attorney and jurist who served as a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York and legal adviser to the United States State Department. After resigning from the State Department, he became the George P. Shultz Senior Fellow in Foreign Policy and National Security Affairs at the Hoover Institution. Ariela Sofer is an Israeli and American operations researcher whose research expertise includes algorithms for mathematical optimization and their application to the reconstruction of three-dimensional shapes from positron emission tomography. She is a professor of systems engineering and operations research at George Mason University, and Divisional Dean for the Volgenau School of Engineering at George Mason University. Chaim Sofer
Chaim Sofer (also known as the Machne Chaim, the name of his responsa) (September 29, 1821 – June 28, 1886) was a renowned Hungarian rabbi and "scholarly spokesperson for Orthodox Judaism during his time." Biography Chaim Sofer was born in Pressburg, Hungary (now Bratislava, Slovakia) on September 29, 1821. His father was Mordechai Efraim Fischel. Sofer attended the famous ''yeshiva'' of Rabbi Moses Sofer (no relation) in Pressburg, and was considered his "most distinguished student". He also attended the ''yeshiva'' of Rabbi Meir Eisenstaedter in Ungvar, Hungary (now Uzhhorod, Ukraine). In 1844, aged 23, he was hired to teach high-school students in a ''yeshiva'' in Mattersdorf, Hungary (now Mattersburg, Austria). Jekuthiel Sofer
Jekuthiel Sofer was a prolific Jewish Sephardic scribe in Amsterdam in the 18th century. Activities Sofer appears to have been commissioned by the Sephardic community in Amsterdam to create liturgical manuscripts in a unique style; he often wrote in letters with tagin, ritual script which can be used in a Sefer Torah or Megillat Taanit. Moses Sofer
Moses Schreiber (1762–1839), known to his own community and Jewish posterity in the Hebrew translation as Moshe Sofer, also known by his main work ''Chatam Sofer'', ''Chasam Sofer'', or ''Hatam Sofer'' ( trans. Ofir Sofer (, born 1 August 1975) is an Israeli politician. He is currently a member of the Knesset for the Religious Zionist Party. Sofer is a former IDF major and is considered a disabled veteran. Afterwards he worked at the Ministry for the Development of the Periphery, the Negev and the Galilee. Political career In 2014, he became secretary general of the Orthodox-nationalist Tkuma party. When the party joined the Union of Right-Wing Parties alliance for the April 2019 Knesset elections, Sofer was placed fourth on the alliances' list, and entered the Knesset when it won five seats. During the 2021 election he ran in Likud list for the Knesset, as a member of Atid Ehad party, using it as a shelf party. Avraham Shmuel Binyamin Sofer (german: link=no, Abraham Samuel Benjamin Schreiber), also known by his main work Ksav Sofer or Ketav Sofer ( trans. ''Writ of the Scribe''), (1815–1871), was one of the leading rabbis of Hungarian Jewry in the second half of the nineteenth century and rosh yeshiva of the famed Pressburg Yeshiva.
