A sock is a piece of clothing worn on the feet and often covering the ankle or some part of the Calf (leg), calf. Some types of shoes or boots are typically worn over socks. In ancient times, socks were made from leather or matted animal hair. In the late 16th century, machine-knit socks were first produced. Until the 1800s, both hand-made and machine-knit socks were manufactured, with the latter technique becoming more common in the 19th century, and continuing until the modern day. One of the roles of socks is absorbing perspiration. The foot is among the heaviest producers of sweat in the body, it can produce over of perspiration per day; socks help to absorb this sweat and draw it to areas where air can evaporate the perspiration. They also protect shoes, a more expensive, durable, and frequently reworn foot covering, from perspiration, extending their life. Jack Sock (born September 24, 1992) is an American former professional tennis doubles and a current pickleball player. He won four career singles titles and 17 doubles titles on the ATP Tour, and had career-high tennis rankings of world No. 8 in singles (on 20 November 2017) and world No. 2 in doubles (on 10 September 2018). The Beardmore Glacier in Antarctica is one of the largest valley glaciers in the world, being long and having a width of . Anthony Byrne (6 July 1930 – 27 April 2013), commonly known as Tony Byrne or Socks Byrne, was an amateur boxer. Byrne won a bronze medal for Ireland at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia, in the lightweight division. Early life and career Byrne was born in Drogheda, Ireland. Harry "Socks" Seibold (May 31, 1896 – September 21, 1965) was an American professional baseball pitcher. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Philadelphia Athletics and Boston Braves. Seibold debuted in 1915 with the Athletics as a shortstop, but was converted to pitcher in 1916.
