Société Suisse pour l'Industrie Horlogère (SSIH) is a former group of Swiss watchmakers comprising the brands Omega, Tissot and Lemania. History SSIH was created on February 24, 1930 in Geneva by Tissot and Omega, to be joined in 1932 by Lemania Watch Co and A. Lugrin Co in L'Orient ( Vallée de Joux). The company specialized in the manufacture of horological complications, enabling Omega to obtain the timing of the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. This was an important step for the development of Omega's important Sports' Watches segment with exclusive chronographs, such as the Omega Speedmaster. The merger agreement foresaw Omega's concentration on the luxury watch segment, whereas Tissot's mission was to concentrate on the medium price range segment. Omega SA is a Swiss luxury watchmaker based in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland. Founded by Louis Brandt in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1848, the company formerly operated as ''Louis Brandt et Fils'' until incorporating the name ''Omega'' in 1903, becoming ''Louis Brandt et Frère-Omega Watch & Co.'' Ernst Thomke (born 21 April 1939) is a Swiss physicist and watchmaker. Training first as a mechanic, he later acquired the Swiss federal maturity degree and pursued academic studies whilst in employment. Early life and education Thomke was born in Biel/Bienne in the canton of Bern, on the Franco-German linguistic border. He completed an apprenticeship as a mechanic at the factory of ETA SA in Grenchen, canton of Solothurn. Between 1961 and 1967, he studied natural sciences, mainly chemistry at the University of Bern and University of Lausanne. He then pursued medical studies in Bern while working full-time. He was promoted to doctor in 1975. He completed his education with management studies and marketing at the INSEAD, Fontainebleau. Omega Speedmaster is a line of chronograph Watch, wristwatches produced by Omega SA. While chronographs have existed since the late 1800s, Omega first introduced this line of chronographs in 1957. Since then, many different chronograph Movement (clockwork), movements have been marketed under the Speedmaster name. Astronaut Wally Schirra, Walter Schirra was the first person to wear one in space in 1962 during his Mercury-Atlas 8 mission. Chronograph
A chronograph is a specific type of watch that is used as a stopwatch combined with a display watch. A basic chronograph has hour and minute hands on the main dial to tell the time, a small seconds hand to tell that the watch is running, and a seconds hand on the main dial usually equipped with a sweeping movement for precision accompanied by a minutes sub dial for the stopwatch. Another sub dial to measure the hours of the stopwatch may also be included on a chronograph. The stopwatch can be started, stopped, and reset to zero at any time by the user by operating pushers usually placed adjacent to the crown.
