Skate-spot
A skate spot is a location used for skateboarding. A range of locations qualify as a skate spots, as any area where you can ride your skateboard can be considered a skate spot. From the flat ground basketball courts at Thompkins Square Park to the large concrete ledges of Hubba Hideout, skate spots exist in every shape in every city. Not all skate spots last forever. In some instances, the local skateboarding community rallies together to attempt to save a treasured skate spot, such as with the Brooklyn Banks. Skate spots are sometimes turned into DIY skateparks when skateboarders bring in obstacles and cement to make their own terrain. Skateboarding is an extreme sport, action sport originating in the United States that involves riding and performing tricks using a skateboard, as well as a recreational activity, an art form, an entertainment industry Profession, job, and a method of transportation. Skateboarding has been shaped and influenced by many skateboarders throughout the years. Hubba Hideout
Hubba Hideout was one of the most famous skateboarding spots. It was located in San Francisco near the Justin Herman Plaza on The Embarcadero. Its central features were two oversized sets of 6 stairs with large concrete ledges on both sides. The spot is part of a pedestrian walkway but was more commonly used by the local skateboarders and vagrants. The city of San Francisco made numerous attempts over the years to ward off skateboarders from the spot, and in January 2011 city workers completely demolished its ledges and stairs. Etymology Hubba Hideout got its handle because of the nefarious denizens that would frequent the skate spot looking for a hidden place to engage in illicit activity. The nickname was a nod to the Bay Area slang term for crack cocaine: "hubbas." Thompkins Square Park
Tompkins Square Park is a public park in the Alphabet City portion of East Village, Manhattan, New York City. The square-shaped park, bounded on the north by East 10th Street, on the east by Avenue B, on the south by East 7th Street, and on the west by Avenue A, is abutted by St. Marks Place to the west. EZ-7
EZ-7 is a famous skate-spot located in Houston, Texas, USA. The EZ-7 is easily recognized by its large amount of graffiti covering the drainage ditch. As described in a 1985 article: It is actually a drainage ditch located in northwestern Houston. It has been used by skateboarders since the early 1970s and has gained in popularity. Maloof Money Cup
The Maloof Money Cup was an annual skateboarding competition for amateur and professional skateboarders founded by Joe and Gavin Maloof of the Maloof family. The events were held in four cities: Costa Mesa, California in 2008, 2009, 2010; New York City in 2010 and 2011; Washington, D.C. in 2011, and in Kimberley, South Africa in 2011 and 2012. The aim of the competition was to raise awareness of skateboarding and to encourage participation in skateboarding events and activities. Organizers also aim to contribute new skateboarding infrastructure and boost retail activity in those areas where events are held. West LA Courthouse Skate Plaza
The West Los Angeles Courthouse (West LA Courthouse) is a street skateboarding spot in Santa Monica, Los Angeles County, California. Once an illicit skate spot, this location became a public skatepark. Nike Skateboarding hosted a "Go Skateboarding Day" event in 2014 that led to a chain of events in which local skatepark advocates worked with the city to convert the space into a legal skate spot. Wallenberg Set
Wallenberg, also known as the Wallenberg Four, is located at the Raoul Wallenberg Traditional High School in San Francisco, California, United States. It is a popular gap among the skateboarding community and measures to a height of 4 feet 4.8 inches and a length of 16 feet 6 inches. While the stair set is still there, the school has re-profiled the "run up" to the set so it is no longer possible to use Vega Street to gain speed; it has to be obtained from a ramp, roll in or by gaining speed in some other form. The Rom
The Rom is a Grade II listed skatepark in Hornchurch, East London, England. Built in 1978, and designed by Adrian Rolt of G-Force, it is the most completely preserved purpose-built skatepark in England. It is the first skatepark in Europe to achieve listed status and the second such structure worldwide. History It was built and opened in August 1978 and is named after the adjacent River Rom. The Rincon Big Four is a famous skate spot in Escondido, California, USA that has shown up numerous times in skateboard media outlets, such as videos and magazines. It is located at Rincon Middle School, which has been a popular landmark for skateboarding for over a decade. Nude Bowl
The Nude Bowl was a popular skateboarding locale from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. The name comes from the fact that the site was once a naturist resort named "Desert Gardens Ranch." It is outside Desert Hot Springs, California and consists of an abandoned kidney bean shaped swimming pool and a few foundations of buildings that used to surround the area. There is no paved road to the Nude Bowl. Initially, the Nude Bowl was merely a skateboarding party location, but by the 1990s, large parties and violence became commonplace there. After numerous complaints about guns and fighting around the Nude Bowl, the police filled it in with dirt. Skateboarders returned, removed the dirt, and repaired the bowl. After a few months, the police broke up the concrete and buried the remains of the bowl, but recently the pool was dug up and repaired and is now intact.
