Sjernarøyane
Sjernarøyane is an island group in Stavanger municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. The islands are located in the Nedstrandsfjorden, west of the large island of Ombo and north of the large island of Finnøy. As of 2014, the islands were home to 365 residents. The islands were historically part of the municipality of Sjernarøy before merging into the municipality of Finnøy in 1965. Then in 2020, the islands were transferred to Stavanger municipality. The Aubøsund strait, which runs between the islands of Aubø and Bjergøy was a historically important trading post. The name comes from Old Norse word ''"Sjǫrn"'' which means the number seven, since historically the archipelago had seven inhabited islands. Today the Sjernarøyane islands refer to the group of many small and larger islands. The inhabited islands today include Kyrkjøy, Bjergøy, Eriksholmen, Tjul, Nord-Hidle, Aubø, Helgøy, and Nord-Talgje. Ombo
Ombo is an island in the municipality of Stavanger in Rogaland county, Norway. The island is the largest island in the Ryfylke region and the second largest island in Rogaland county. There are several villages on the island, including Jørstadvåg, where Jørstad Church is located, Atlatveit, and Eidssund in the western part of the island and the villages of Tuftene, Skipavik, Skår, and Vestersjø are located on the southeastern part of the island. The island is the northeastern most part of the vast Stavanger municipality, nearly from the city of Stavanger, the administrative centre of the municipality. Prior to 2020, the island was divided between the municipalities Hjelmeland and Finnøy. In 2020, the island joined Stavanger municipality. Sjernarøy is a former municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. The island municipality existed from 1868 until its dissolution in 1965. The municipality was located in the Boknafjorden in the present-day municipality of Stavanger. The administrative centre of the municipality was located on the island of Kyrkjøy, where the Sjernarøy Church is located. Sjernarøy consisted of several small and larger islands for a total of of land. Finnøy
Finnøy is a former municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. The island municipality existed from 1838 until its dissolution in 2020 when it was merged into Stavanger Municipality. It was located in the traditional district of Ryfylke. The administrative centre of the municipality was the village of Judaberg. The municipality consisted of a number of islands on the south side of the Boknafjorden, about northeast of the city of Stavanger. The Finnøy Tunnel connects the two islands of Finnøy and Talgje to the mainland. The rest of the islands are accessible only by boat. Finnøy is an agricultural community dominated by dairy, meat, poultry, and fish farming products, with strong horticultural traditions, mainly greenhouse production of tomatoes, as well as some tourism. Nedstrandsfjorden
Boknafjord or Boknafjorden () is a fjord located in Rogaland county, Norway. The huge fjord lies between the cities of Stavanger and Haugesund and dominates the central part of the county. The main part of the fjord is shared between the municipalities of Kvitsøy, Stavanger, Tysvær, Bokn, and Karmøy. There are dozens of smaller fjords that branch off the main part of the fjord, reaching most municipalities in the county. At its longest, the Boknafjord reaches about into the mainland at the innermost point of the Hylsfjorden. Other notable branches include the Saudafjorden, Sandsfjorden, Vindafjorden, Hervikfjorden, Førresfjorden, Erfjorden, Jøsenfjorden, Årdalsfjorden, Idsefjorden, Høgsfjorden, Lysefjorden, and Gandsfjorden. Finnøy (island)
Finnøy is an island in Stavanger municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. The island is located on the southern side of the Boknafjorden, about northeast of the city of Stavanger. The largest urban area on the island is the village of Judaberg which is located on the eastern shore of the island. The village of Hesby, on the western coast, is a historical seat of power dating back to the Middle Ages. Hesby is also the site of Hesby Church which dates back to around the year 1100 A.D. Prior to 2020, the island was part of Finnøy municipality. Finnøy island is connected to the mainland by a series of bridges and undersea tunnels. Finnøy Tunnel connects Finnøy to the nearby island of Rennesøy, and to the nearby island of Talgje. Aubøsund
Aubøsund or Audbøsund is a small strait between the islands of Aubø and Bjergøy in the Sjernarøyane archipelago in the northeastern part of the large Stavanger Municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. The strait was the site of an old trading place and transportation hub, and today there remains a wharf, store, and post office. History The name probably comes from a combination of the Old Norse male name ''Audi'' and the word ''bø'' which means "farm". A burial mound at Steinneset suggests that the place has been inhabited since the Iron Age. Since the earliest writings in the 1500s, Aubøsund has been a croft, belonging to the farm at Aubø. Around 1860, trading and herring industry was started in Mariavigen. In 1913, the current store at the pier was built, and the old store at Mariavigen has since been used as a boathouse. Sjernarøy Church
Sjernarøy Church () is a parish church of the Church of Norway in the large Stavanger Municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. It is located on the island of Kyrkjøy in the Sjernarøyane islands. It is the church for the Sjernarøy parish which is part of the Tungenes prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Stavanger. The red, wooden church was built in a Churches in Norway#Floor plan, long church design in 1647 using designs by an unknown architect. The church seats about 160 people. The interior walls of the church are decorated with hand-painted rosemåling.
