Sint-Truiden (; ; ) is a City status in Belgium, city and Municipalities in Belgium, municipality located in the Provinces of Belgium, province of Limburg (Belgium), Limburg, Flemish Region, Belgium. With more than 41,500 inhabitants, it is one of the largest cities in Limburg. Sint-Truiden Abbey
Sint-Truiden Abbey or St Trudo's Abbey (; ) is a former Benedictine monastery in Sint-Truiden (named after Saint Trudo) in the province of Limburg, Belgium. The abbey was founded in the 7th century and was one of the oldest and most powerful in the Low Countries. The town of Sint-Truiden grew up around it. The great Romanesque abbey church, dedicated to Saint Remaclus and Saint Quintin, was demolished in 1798, four years after the suppression of the abbey. History Foundation and early years The monastery was founded by Saint Trudo in about 655, on a spot known as ''Sarchinium'' (Zerkingen). After his death and canonisation the monastery became a place of pilgrimage (the dedication of the abbey to Saint Trudo did not however take place until the 12th century). Other early members of the community were also declared saints, among them Eucherius of Orléans and Libert of Saint-Trond. Kerkom-bij-Sint-Truiden
Kerkom-bij-Sint-Truiden (or simply Kerkom) is a village in the Sint-Truiden municipality of the Limburg province in the Flemish Community of Belgium. Kerkom-bij-Sint-Truiden was an independent municipality until 1970 when it merged with Borlo. In 1976, the village opted to become part of Sint-Truiden. History The village was first mentioned in 1065 as Kyreheim. The village was a ''heerlijkheid'' in the County of Loon. In the late 14th century until 1675, the village was a possession of the Van Alsteren family. The Castle of Kerkhom was first mentioned in 1396. In the 18th Century, the van Schoor family built a classical castle on the site. In 1889, an eclectic castle was built to the north-east. Most of the older castle was demolished except for the towers and one wing. The castle is currently in use by a fruit company. Kerkom-bij-Sint-Truiden is a rural village on the Brook. Zepperen
Zepperen is a village and a former municipality. It is part of the municipality of Sint-Truiden in the province of Limburg in Belgium. This village developed in the northern, humid part of Haspengouw close to the stream Melsterbeek. This rivulet starts about 15 kilometers to the south near the border between Flanders and Wallonia and merges with the river Gete near Geetbets. Traces of the prehistoric and Roman occupation were found alongside this river and alongside the Eigenbeek in the northern part of Zepperen. The name of the village, in his Latin form ‘Septimburias’ or seven cabins, was first mentioned in the late 8th century. In the life of Saint Trudo, the founder of the nearby city of Sint-Truiden, is noted how the holy boy held a regularly nocturnal pilgrimage to Saint-Genevieve of Paris, especially worshipped in Zepperen.
