Guy Simonds
Lieutenant-General Guy Granville Simonds, (April 23, 1903 – May 15, 1974) was a senior Canadian Army officer who served with distinction during World War II. Acknowledged by many military historians and senior commanders, among them Sir Max Hastings and Field Marshal Sir Bernard Montgomery, as one of the best Canadian generals of the war, Simonds, after serving the first few years of the Second World War mainly as a staff officer, commanded the 1st Canadian Infantry Division with distinction in Sicily and Italy from July 1943 until January 1944, and later II Canadian Corps during the Battle of Normandy from June−August 1944 and throughout the subsequent campaign in Western Europe from 1944, towards the end of which he temporarily commanded the First Canadian Army during the Battle of the Scheldt, until victory in Europe Day in May 1945. H & G Simonds Ltd
H & G Simonds Ltd was a brewing company founded in Reading, Berkshire, England in 1785 by William Blackall Simonds. The company amalgamated with Courage & Barclay in 1960 and dropped the Simonds name after ten years. Eventually the firm became part of Scottish & Newcastle who sold the brands to Wells & Young's Brewery in 2007 and closed the Reading brewery three years later. History The Simonds brewery was founded in Broad Street in Reading by William Blackall Simonds in 1785, although his father had a brewing arm of his malting business as early as 1760. In 1790 the company moved to Bridge Street, where it remained until 1978. The new brewery complex was designed by architect Sir John Soane and possessed an early Boulton & Watt steam engine. Ossian Cole Simonds (November 11, 1855 – November 20, 1931), often known as O. C. Simonds, was an American landscape designer. He preferred the term 'landscape gardener' to that of 'landscape architect'. A number of Simonds' works are listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Early life and education Simonds was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on November 11, 1855 where he developed a love of nature through his explorations of its woods. From 1874-1878 studied civil engineering at the University of Michigan and, briefly, architecture with William Le Baron Jenney. Career In 1878, Simonds joined Jenney's architectural practice in Chicago. His first project was Graceland Cemetery where he learned naturalistic English-style landscape design. Through Jenney's tutelage, he learned how to use native plants in landscape design, an unusual practice at the time. William Blackall Simonds
William Blackall Simonds (1761–1834) was a brewer and banker in the English town of Reading. He founded both H & G Simonds Brewery, which merged with other breweries to form Courage, Barclay, Simonds & Co in 1960, and J & C Simonds Bank, one of the precursors to Barclays bank. Simonds came from a family with estates at Arborfield to the south-east of Reading, but his father, William Simonds senior, had moved to Reading to set up a malting business that later grew to include brewing. William senior married Mary Blackall, and William Blackall Simonds was their only son. He was probably born in Reading, with records showing that he was baptised at the Broad Street Independent Chapel in Reading on 13 August 1761. When William senior died in 1782, William Blackall Simonds inherited his business. Kenneth Wayne Simonds (May 5, 1935 – October 11, 2009) was an American businessman and philanthropist. Life He began his career in 1958 at IBM and was the youngest IBM manager when promoted to Green Bay, Wisconsin. He left IBM in 1975 to become an executive with Amdahl Corporation, starting as vice president of Western operations in 1975. He was promoted in 1976 to Vice President of Product Support and Services and promoted in 1979 to Senior Vice President of U.S. Operations. In 1981, he was promoted to Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer where he would stay until briefly going into retirement in 1984. He was a member of the team which had led Amdahl from no revenue in 1975 to $800 million dollars in revenue in 1984. Simonds is a civil parish in Carleton County, New Brunswick, Canada, located north of Woodstock on the western bank of the Saint John River. Prior to the 2023 governance reform, for governance purposes it was comprised one local service district and part of one town, both of which were members of the Western Valley Regional Service Commission (WVRSC). The Census subdivision of Simonds Parish includes all of the civil parish except the town of Florenceville-Bristol. Origin of name The parish may have been named in honour of Charles Simonds, Speaker of the House of Assembly when the parish was erected, or his family, who were prominent in the early history of the province. Gavin Simonds, 1st Viscount Simonds
Gavin Turnbull Simonds, 1st Viscount Simonds, (28 November 1881 – 28 June 1971) was a British judge, politician and Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain. Background and education Simonds was born in Reading, Berkshire, the son of Louis DeLuze Simonds and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Turnbull. They were members of a well-known Berkshire family of brewing magnates (see H & G Simonds Ltd). He was educated at Winchester College (where he was later a Fellow, and Warden from 1946 to 1951) and at New College, Oxford. Legal and political career Simonds was called to the bar in 1906, and appointed a King's Counsel in 1924. He was elected a Bencher of Lincoln's Inn in 1929 and was Treasurer from 1951. He served as a Judge of the Chancery Division of the High Court of Justice between 1937, when he was knighted, and 1944. Justin Daniel Simonds (22 May 1890 – 3 November 1967) was an Australian prelate of the Roman Catholic Church, serving as the 5th Archbishop of Hobart from 1937 to 1942 and as the 4th Archbishop of Melbourne from 1963 to 1967. Early years Born in Glen Innes, New South Wales, Simonds was educated in Deepwater, Blacktown and then Sydney Boys' High School before studying for the priesthood at St Patrick's College, Manly. He was ordained a priest by Archbishop Michael Kelly on 30 November 1912 at St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney. Posted to Bega, Simonds served as a curate before he returned to St Patrick's Seminary as a professor of sacred scripture and Greek. George Blackall Simonds (6 October 1843 – 16 December 1929) was an English people, English sculpture, sculptor and director of H & G Simonds Brewery in Reading, Berkshire, Reading in the England, English county of Berkshire. Biography George was the second son of George Simonds Senior of Reading, director of H & G Simonds, and Mary Anne, the daughter of William Boulger of Bradfield, Berkshire, Bradfield. D'Marcus Simonds (born October 20, 1997) is an American basketball player. He played college basketball for Georgia State Panthers men's basketball, Georgia State. He was named the 2017–18 Sun Belt Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year, Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year as well as the Georgia Men’s College Co-Player of the Year. Prep career Simonds played his junior and senior seasons for Gainesville High School (Georgia), Gainesville. His senior season, he averaged 25 points per game. His team was undefeated in region play and advanced to the second round of the state playoffs. Simonds was recognized with all-region and all-state honors. Coming out of high school, Simonds was No. 72 in the country in the ESPN 100 and was a four-star recruit. Simonds is a civil parish in Saint John County, New Brunswick, Canada. For governance purposes it is divided between the local service districts of Fairfield and the parish of Simonds, both of which are members of the Fundy Regional Service Commission (FRSC). Contrary to the map image on this page, Simonds does not and never has included the City of Saint John within its boundaries, although Saint John did annex part of Simonds in 1967. Origin of name The parish may have been named in honour of Charles Simonds, Speaker of the House of Assembly when the parish was erected, or his family, who were prominent in the early history of the province. History Simonds was erected in 1839 from Portland Parish. In 1902 an error in the boundaries of Saint John was corrected, returning part of Simonds.
