Shooting At The 1908 Summer Olympics – Men's 50 Yard Pistol
The men's individual revolver and pistol competition was one of 15 shooting sports events on the shooting at the 1908 Summer Olympics programme. The competition was held on Friday, 10 July 1908. Each nation could enter up to 12 shooters.Official Report, p. 38. Forty-three sport shooters from seven nations competed. Nations were limited to 12 shooters each.Official Report, p. 535. The event was won by Paul Van Asbroeck of Belgium, with his countryman Réginald Storms taking silver. They were the first medals for Belgian shooters in the free pistol. American James Gorman finished with the bronze medal after an unsuccessful protest, claiming he had put one bullet through a previous hole. Bisley, Surrey
Bisley is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Surrey Heath in Surrey, England, approximately southwest of central London. It is midway between Woking (to the east) and Camberley (to the west). The village had a population of 3,965 in the 2011 Census. André Regaud (14 February 1868 – 12 January 1945) was a French shooter who competed at the 1908 Summer Olympics, the 1912 Summer Olympics and the 1920 Summer Olympics. He was born in Lyon and died in Paris. In 1908, he won a bronze medal with the French team in the small-bore rifle event. Reginald Sayre
Reginald Hall Sayre (October 15, 1859 – May 29, 1929) was a prominent American orthopedic surgeon and Olympic sport shooter. Biography Sayre was born to Eliza Ann Hall, an artist and Lewis Albert Sayre, the leading American orthopedic surgeon. He studied at the Churchill & Maury School and Columbia College, graduating in 1881. Two of his elder brothers went into medicine after the father, and thus, Reginald initially thought of becoming a lawyer. However, his brother Lewis persuaded him to follow the family tradition and enter the Bellevue Hospital Medical College in 1881. After graduation in 1884, he worked as an assistant to Hermann Biggs and then joined the practice of his brother Lewis. Later, he began helping his father teach at a college. Sayre started his research from an early age and published most of his papers at a young age. Gustaf Vilhelm Carlberg (5 April 1880 – 1 October 1970) was a Swedish Army officer and sports shooter. He competed at the 1908, 1912, and 1924 Olympics and won three gold and four silver. Thomas LeBoutillier II, sometimes spelled Le Boutillier (January 18, 1879 – September 18, 1929) was an American sports shooter and polo player. He competed in the 50 yard free pistol event at the 1908 Summer Olympics. Biography LeBoutillier was born on January 18, 1879, in New York City to a prominent wealthy family. Among his relatives were George LeBoutillier, a cousin, who was a prominent railroad official, Phillip LeBoutillier, a brother, who was for a time the president of Best & Co., and John, his father, who was a partner in the firm Leboutillier Bros. Léon Ernest Moreaux (10 March 1852 in Féron – 11 November 1921 in Rennes) was a French Shooting sports, sports shooter and Summer Olympic Games, Olympian who competed in pistol and rifle shooting in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Having taken up the sport of shooting earlier in the 19th century, at the age of 38 he prepared himself for competition in the 1900 Summer Olympics, 1900 Olympic Games, which were held in Paris in his home country. William Savage Newton (1878 – 6 January 1915) was a British sports shooter. He competed in the 50 yard free pistol event at the 1908 Summer Olympics. Born in Montreal, Quebec, of parents who later settled in England at Surbiton, Surrey, he was an engineer in civilian life and also served as a Captain in the Honourable Artillery Company. William Russell Lane-Joynt
William Russell Lane-Joynt (27 March 1855– 6 June 1921), born in Limerick, was an Irish barrister, philatelist and Olympic shooter. He founded the Irish Philatelic Society in Dublin. He assisted the Duke of Leinster to form his collection, which was bequeathed to the Dublin Museum of Science and Art. Lane-Joynt was one of only two Irish philatelists to be honoured by signing the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists. Life He was the son of William Lane-Joynt, Mayor of Limerick (1862) and Lord Mayor of Dublin (1867). He had four brothers and a sister. One of his brothers was the surgeon and radiologist, Richard Lane Joynt. Educated at Windermere College, Wales, Lane-Joynt graduated with a B.A. and M.B. from Trinity College, Dublin in 1878.
