The Shagan ( - ''Şağan''; - ''Chagan''), is a river in the Zhanasemey, Abai and Beskaragay districts of Abai Region, east Kazakhstan. It is a tributary of the Irtysh. The river is long and the area of its basin is . Geography The Shagan has its sources in the northwestern slopes of the Chingiztau, a subrange of the Kazakh Uplands. It heads mainly northwards along semi-desert areas all along its course. Finally it meets the left bank of the Irtysh to the west of Semey, former Semipalatinsk, city. Its food is mainly snow and the river is under ice between November and April. It flows during the spring floods, from May to June. In the summer it dries up or breaks up into disconnected pools. Shagan (lake, Abai Region)
Shagan () or Chagan () is a lake in Zhanasemey District, Abai Region, Kazakhstan.Google Earth Formed by a nuclear test explosion in 1965, it is part of the Balapan complex, one of the main tourist attractions of the Semipalatinsk Test Site. Geography The lake lies to the south of the Irtysh and about to the southwest of Semey, formerly Semipalatinsk. The lake lies to the north of the confluence of the Shagan river, of the Irtysh basin, and its tributary the north-flowing Ashchysu. The Shagan river was channeled to fill the newly created crater until 1965. A few years later, a dam was built on the left bank of the river to control the water level in the reservoir that formed to the south. The reservoir still exists today, unchanged since the explosion. Chagan (lake, Kulunda Steppe)
Chagan (; ) is a salt lake in Karasuksky District, Novosibirsk Oblast, Russia, with a small part in Uspen District, Pavlodar Region, Kazakhstan. Lake Chagan is located at the Russia-Kazakhstan border. Bogatyr town lies by the southwestern shore, in the Kazakh side, and now abandoned Pervomaysky village by the southeastern shore, in the Russian side. The latter was abolished in 2011. Geography The lake lies in the northern part of the Kulunda Plain. The Kazakhstan–Russia border runs diagonally off the shore from northwest to southeast across the southwestern side. Most of the lake is within Russian territory. Sary Shagan (; ) is an anti-ballistic missile testing range located in Kazakhstan. On 17 August 1956 the Council of Ministers of the Soviet Union authorized plans for an experimental facility for missile defence located at Sary Shagan, on the west bank of Lake Balkhash. The first missile launched from the facility was a V-1000 on 16 October 1958, but the facilities for full-scale testing were not ready until 1961. Sary Shagan remains in use, with the latest known launch on 2 December 2022. The town of Sary Shagan was a closed city until 2005. The administrative centre, Priozersk remained a closed city. The length of the site is 480 km. The Sary Shagan range was the intended landing site for the sample return canister of the Russian Fobos-Grunt mission.
