''Sexo, pudor y lágrimas'' (''Sex, Shame, and Tears'') is a Mexican Romantic comedy, romantic Comedy film, comedy drama film, the second of the so-called New Era of the Cinema of Mexico (after ''Like Water for Chocolate (film), Like Water for Chocolate'') and the directorial debut of Antonio Serrano (director), Antonio Serrano. The film won five Ariel Awards. The film is based on Serrano's stage play of the same name, which ran for two years. The film broke box-office records in Mexico, grossing MX$118 million (roughly US$11 million). It played for six months, and was seen by more than eight million people in Mexico alone. Antonio Serrano (director)
José Antonio Serrano Argüelles (born 17 May 1955, in Mexico City) is a Mexican film director, actor, playwright and screenwriter. He graduated with a degree in Communication studies, Communications from the Universidad Iberoamericana. He also attended the ''Royal Weber Academy of Dramatic Art'' in England and the ''Odin Teater'' of Denmark. He studied with the following directors: Poland, Polish Jerzy Grotowski, France, French Philippe Gaulier and Italy, Italian Carlos Bosso. Back in Mexico he worked in the telenovela (soap opera) industry for Televisa and TV Azteca, directing actors such as Gael García Bernal, Salma Hayek, Chayanne and Angélica Aragón.
