Schwarzbier
() is a dark lager that originated in Germany. It has an opaque, black colour with hints of chocolate or coffee flavours, and is generally around 5% ABV. It is similar to stout in that it is made from roasted malt, which gives it its dark colour. Characteristics Schwarzbiers are made using a cool fermentation method, which classes them as lager, though historically warm fermentation was used. The alcohol content usually ranges from 4.4% to 5.4%. They get their dark colour from the use of particularly dark malts or roast malt extract in brewing. Xingu (beer)
Xingu is a Brazilian beer brand. It was created by Amazon, Inc., a Brattleboro, Vermont based beer import company, founded by Anne Latchis and four women friends in June 1986. Anne's husband, beer historian Alan D. Eames was the guiding consultant on the project and artist Eric Green was contracted with to design the original diamond-shaped map label. The concept of the brand was inspired by the Women in brewing, history of women brewing a "beer-like" fermented beverage from manioc root in the Amazon region of Brazil. The black lager style, or schwarzbier, was chosen to resurrect a nearly extinct style of beer in the US market. The brand was named for the Xingu River, a tributary of the Amazon River, to raise awareness of the need for conservation to protect the rainforest environment and home to the surviving members of the Kayapo native tribes. Sprecher Brewery
Sprecher Brewery is a brewery in Glendale, Wisconsin, U.S. It was founded in 1985 in Milwaukee by Randal Sprecher, and is Milwaukee's first craft brewery since Prohibition. Sprecher produces an assortment of beers, flavored malt beverages, and craft sodas, and it is famous for its root beer. Despite producing a full range of award-winning craft beers, the brewery is arguably best known for its Black Bavarian (schwarzbier) and premium sodas. Sprecher brews more root beer than all of its alcoholic beers combined. History The founder, Randal Sprecher, a California native, earned his first degree in oceanography and his second in brewing. History The brewery was first mentioned in inheritance tax documents as "Köstritzer Inheritance" in 1543, which makes it one of the oldest breweries in Germany. In 1696, the Counts of House Reuss acquired the brewery and renamed it to the "Knightly Estate Brewery." Since 1806, the brewery has been permitted to use the title "Princely Brewery" since the Knights of House Reuss were promoted to princes. In 1811, 6400 hectoliters (hl)(169,070.1 gallons) of different beers were produced and sold in cities as far away as Berlin, Dresden, Magdeburg and Frankfurt am Main. Brunswick Mum (, or ''Mumia'', ), was originally an alcoholic beer from Brunswick in Germany, which ranged from weak to strong depending on the brewing method. One of the first black beers recorded in history. History Mum originated in the Late Middle Ages. The composition gave the beer a long shelf life that allowed a wide distribution; mum became the most important export from Brunswick and, in the early modern period was shipped to places such as India and the Caribbean.
