Saudi Space Agency
The Saudi Space Agency (SSA; ar, وكالة الفضاء السعودية), previously known as the Saudi Space Commission (SSC), is a Saudi Arabia, Saudi independent government entity established by a royal order on December27, 2018 and elevated to an agency on June 14, 2023. The agency is chaired by Abdullah Alswaha, the Saudi Minister of Communications and Information Technology. On July 17, 2024 it was reported that the Saudi Space Agency signed a space agreement with NASA to collaborate on civilian space research and explorations. This is another step forward on the country's ambition to create a robust space sector. Spaceflights Prior to the establishment of the Saudi Space Agency, the only Saudi astronaut was prince Sultan bin Salman Al Saud, who flew aboard the Space Shuttle ''Discovery'' in 1985 as a Payload Specialist on STS 51-G. SpaceX Dragon 2
Dragon 2 is a class of partially reusable spacecraft developed and manufactured by American aerospace manufacturer SpaceX, primarily for flights to the International Space Station (ISS). SpaceX has also launched private missions such as Inspiration4 and Axiom Mission 1. There are two variants: Crew Dragon, a spacecraft capable of ferrying four crew, and Cargo Dragon, an updated replacement for the original Dragon 1. The spacecraft consists of a reuseable space capsule and an expendable trunk module. The spacecraft launches atop a Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket and the capsule returns to Earth via splashdown. To date, there have been four astronauts of Arab origin, also called "najmonauts" ('najm' meaning 'star' in Arabic). Mariam H. Fardous ( ar, مريم حامد خليل فردوس) (born 15 September 1984; Mecca) is a Saudi astronaut, selected as a back-up astronaut for Axiom Mission 2 by the Saudi Space Commission; her selection was officially announced on February 12, 2023. She is a Saudi epidemiologist, humanitarian, scuba diver who was raised in Mecca. She became the first Saudi woman and the first Arab woman to dive deep in the Arctic Ocean (North Arctic Circle) on 1 May 2015. Axiom Mission 2
Axiom Mission 2 (or Ax-2) is a planned private crew mission to the International Space Station (ISS), operated by Axiom Space. Its first two crew members have been announced in May 2021. In December 2021, NASA confirmed that the mission would fly on a Crew Dragon. In August 2022, NASA announced that the mission would launch in the second quarter of 2023. It is the second Axiom mission, after Axiom Mission 1 in April 2022. The crew will include former NASA Astronaut Peggy Whitson as mission commander and John Shoffner as pilot.
