Sara (Starship Song)
"Sara" is a song recorded by the American rock band Starship which reached number-one on the U.S. ''Billboard'' Hot 100 chart on March 15, 1986. It was sung by Mickey Thomas, of the newly renamed band Starship, from their first album '' Knee Deep in the Hoopla'', and Grace Slick provided the backing vocals. The recording became one of the best-selling singles of 1986 in North America. It was the band's second number-one hit after the song "We Built This City" hit that mark a few months earlier in 1985. It also became the band's first number-one song on the adult contemporary chart, where it remained for three weeks. Although written by Peter and Ina Wolf, the song was named for Sara (née Kendrick), Thomas's wife at the time. Reception ''Cash Box'' called it a "melodic ballad hathas a biting rock edge led by Mickey Thomas' riveting vocal" and said it has "an ethereal chorus and shy guitars". Starship (band)
Starship is an American rock band from San Francisco, California. Initially a continuation of Jefferson Starship, it underwent a change in musical direction, the subsequent loss of personnel, and a lawsuit settlement that led to a name change. Starship's 1985 album, '' Knee Deep in the Hoopla'', was certified platinum by the RIAA, and included two singles that went to number one on the US '' Billboard'' Hot 100 chart: " We Built This City" and " Sara". Their follow up album, '' No Protection'', released in 1987, was certified gold and featured the band's third number one single, " Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now". Dust Bowl
The Dust Bowl was a period of severe dust storms that greatly damaged the ecology and agriculture of the American and Canadian prairies during the 1930s. The phenomenon was caused by a combination of natural factors (severe drought) and human-made factors: a failure to apply dryland farming methods to prevent aeolian processes, wind erosion, most notably the destruction of the natural topsoil by settlers in the region. The drought came in three waves: 1934–35 North American drought, 1934, 1936, and 1939–1940, but some regions of the High Plains (United States), High Plains experienced drought conditions for as long as eight years. It exacerbated Interwar farm crisis, an already existing agricultural recession. Springbok Radio (spelled ''Springbokradio'' in Afrikaans, ) was a South African nationwide radio station that operated from 1950 to 1985. History SABC's decision in December 1945 to develop a commercial service was constrained by post-war financial issues. After almost five years of investigation and after consulting John Reith, 1st Baron Reith, Lord Reith of the BBC and the South African government, it decided to introduce commercial radio to supplement the SABC's public service English and Afrikaans networks and help solve the SABC's financial problems. St Ives, New South Wales
St Ives is a suburb on the Upper North Shore of Sydney in the state of New South Wales, Australia 18 kilometres north of the Sydney Central Business District in the local government area of Ku-ring-gai Council. St Ives Chase is a separate adjacent area, designated suburb, to the west and north. Kent Music Report
The Kent Music Report was a weekly record chart of Australian music singles and albums which was compiled by music historian David Kent from May 1974 through to January 1999. The chart was re-branded the Australian Music Report (AMR) in July 1987. From June 1988, the Australian Recording Industry Association, which had been using the top 50 portion of the report under licence since mid-1983, chose to produce their own listing as the ARIA Charts. Before the Kent Report, ''Go-Set'' magazine published weekly Top 40 Singles from 1966, and albums chart from 1970 until the magazine's demise in August 1974. David Kent later published Australian charts from 1940 to 1973 in a retrospective fashion, using state by state chart data obtained from various Australian radio stations. Donny Baldwin
Donald Baldwin (born June 22, 1951) is an American drummer best known as a member of Jefferson Starship (1982–1984; 2008–present) and its continuation Starship (band), Starship (1984–1989). Early life Baldwin was raised in Palo Alto, California. He attended Ellwood P. Cubberley High School and graduated in 1969. Career Baldwin began his career as a drummer in 1971. He began playing for Elvin Bishop in 1973, where he worked with his future Jefferson Starship bandmate Mickey Thomas (singer), Mickey Thomas on the hit single "Fooled Around and Fell in Love". When the Elvin Bishop band disbanded, Baldwin joined the Santa Cruz band Snail and gigged around the Bay Area (including a stint with Pablo Cruise) until 1982. Peter Roy Sears (born 27 May 1948) is an English rock musician. In a career spanning more than six decades, he has been a member of many bands and has moved through a variety of musical genres, from early R&B, psychedelic improvisational rock of the 1960s, folk, country music, arena rock in the 1970s, and blues. He usually plays bass, keyboards, or both in bands. Craig Clinton Chaquico (or Chaquiço, ; born September 26, 1954) is an American guitarist, songwriter, and composer. From 1974 to 1990 he was lead guitarist for the rock bands Jefferson Starship and Starship (band), Starship. In 1993, he started a solo career as an acoustic jazz guitarist and composer. Early life Chaquico was born and raised in Sacramento, California and attended Carmichael, California#High schools, La Sierra High School in the suburb of Carmichael, California, Carmichael.
