San Michele Arcangelo, Naples
San Michele Arcangelo or San Michele a Port'Alba is one of four major churches facing Piazza Dante in Naples, Italy. It stands near Port'Alba, a city gate opening to the piazza. Construction of the church, originally called ''Santa Maria della Provvidenza'', began around 1620, but it underwent reconstruction in the 18th century by architect Domenico Antonio Vaccaro and expansion by designs of Giuseppe Astarita. The present facade is in Rococo style. The church was reopened in October, 2010. The interior contains a ''St Michael'' by Giuseppe Marullo and a ''Sant'Irene'' and ''Sant'Emidio'' by Vaccaro, the architect. The 18th century ceiling frescoes were painted by Lucio Stabile. San Michele Arcangelo (St Michele Archangel) is a 13th-century Romanesque-style, Roman Catholic church in Volterra, region of Tuscany, Italy. The church is across the street from the Medieval Palazzo Maffei-Guarnacci (Casa Torre Toscano). History While there is documentation dating a church on the site to the 10th century, the Romanesque facade of the church, partially embellished with marble and pietra dura striations dates to around 1285. In the arches are reliefs with the heraldic symbols of the Farnese family. The statue of the Madonna over the portal is a copy of a 14th-century original now in the Museum of Sacred Art. Those expecting the interior will continue in the style of the exterior will be disappointed. The interior was completely modified in the 1820s by the order of the Scolopi, which had owned the church since 1711. San Michele Arcangelo is the parish church in the town of Verghereto, in the province of Forlì-Cesena, region of Emilia Romagna, Italy. History A church of this name was originally attached to a rural Camaldolese monastery. When this collapsed, the church was moved to an equally ancient small ''Oratorio di Sant'Antonio'', outside of the city walls. By 1865, a new church was commissioned and in 1884, construction began of the present church on Via Casentinese, inside the city center. The building was reconstructed after earthquakes in 1918–1919, the second World War nearly razed the structure. Again rebuilt using elements from prior structures, including a bell, dated 1404. A church at the site is documented since the 13th, century, however, the present structure was built 1740–1766. San Michele Arcangelo is the Roman Catholic parish church in the center of the town of Rivodutri, in the province of Rieti, region of Lazio, Italy. History A church at the site was likely present from early medieval times, and is documented in 1252 in a list of churches under the bishop of Rieti. San Michele Arcangelo, also known as Sant'Angelo, is a paleo-Christian temple in the city of Perugia in Umbria. The circular building dates to the 5th to 6th century, and incorporates corinthian capped columns from a prior pagan temple. It is dedicated to the Archangel Michael, whose churches were often located in elevated spots. The small round church is also often called ''Tempio'' or ''Tempietto'', and is located in the neighborhood Borgo Sant'Angelo, near the ancient northern gate (Porta Sant'Angelo) of the city. The structure of the church has been altered across the centuries; in 1479, it was converted into a small fort. A major restoration occurred in 1948 that revealed ancient frescoes and sealed windows.
