San José De Los Ramos
San José de los Ramos is a former town in the east of the Cuban province of Matanzas. It now forms part of Colón, Cuba. It is located some to the north east of the centre of Colón and east of Havana. The municipal district measured and had a population of 9,206 in 1943. History San José de los Ramos was founded in 1844 when the first houses were built near the Júcaro railway. At the centre was the church or chapel of the same name. The original name of the community was Cunagua, a native word which is now one of the neighbourhoods. In 1527, it was sold to Andrés Recio and took the name Las Ciegas (The Blind Women) before becoming San José de los Ramos. In 1879, San José became a municipality (ayuntamiento). In 1902, it was annexed to Colón but was separated again in 1910. In 1940, it became an integral part of the judicial and fiscal district of Colón. Matanzas Province
Matanzas () is one of the provinces of Cuba. Major towns in the province include Cárdenas, Colón, Jovellanos and the capital of the same name, Matanzas. The resort town of Varadero is also located in this province. Among Cuban provinces, Matanzas is one of the most industrialized, with petroleum wells, refineries, supertanker facilities, and 21 sugar mills to process the harvests of the fields of sugarcane in the province. Geography The second largest in Cuba, Matanzas province is largely flat, with its highest point (Pan de Matanzas) at only 380m above sea level. Colón, Cuba
Colón is a municipality and city in the Matanzas Province of Cuba. The municipality has an area of and a population of about 68,021. The city proper, with a population of about 44,000, is the third-largest of its province. History The town was founded in 1836 under the name ''Nueva Bermeja''. The railroad, arrived nearby the town still in 1843, reached it in 1851. In 1852, Fernando Diago, the owner of the sugar mill Ponina, inaugurated the first public school in town. In 1859, it achieved the status of ('town') with the name Colón, after Christopher Columbus ( in Spanish). The founder's name is don Martín José Zozaya, who founded the town in the former hacienda named ''La Bermeja''. The deed to establish the town was signed in the city of Matanzas in 1836. Félix Ramos Y Duarte
Félix Ramos y Duarte (1848–1924) was a Cuban educator and writer, who was exiled from Cuba in 1868. He moved to Yucatán, Mexico and later lived in Veracruz and Mexico City. He compiled the first dictionary of terms that were specifically "Mexican Spanish". Ramos returned to Cuba after it gained independence from Spain. He taught briefly and then served as President of the Teacher Examination Board. He published many textbooks and educational articles.
