''Live '85–'86'' is a live album by American deathrock band Samhain. It was first released as part of the Samhain Box Set in a "mini-LP" sleeve in September 2000, then on its own in a jewel case in 2001 with either an orange or a red cover. The initial pressing with the "orange blood" cover is printed slightly off-center, cutting off part of the "86" in the title. Samhain (band)
Samhain was an American Rock music, rock band formed by singer Glenn Danzig in 1983, immediately following his departure from The Misfits (band), The Misfits. Glenn Danzig originally planned Samhain as a side project with Eerie Von. After the Misfits' contentious 1983 dissolution, Samhain became Danzig's full-time band. Samhain catalogs a transitional period in Glenn Danzig's musical career, bridging the gap between the punk rock/horror punk of the Misfits and the dark, heavy metal (music), heavy metal- and blues-influenced sound of Danzig (band), Danzig. Samhain's lyrics were much darker than those of the Misfits, with themes rooted in paganism and the occult and eventually the horrors of reality, as opposed to the sometimes cartoonish ghouls and ghosts of the Misfits. Deathrock
Deathrock (or death rock) is a rock music subgenre that merges punk rock and post-punk with Gothic fiction, gothic and glam rock visuals and elements of horror film scores. Often overlapping with, and sometimes considered a subgenre of, gothic rock, the genre was pioneered by bands from the early 1980s Los Angeles punk scene, including Christian Death, Kommunity FK, 45 Grave and the Super Heroines. By the middle of the decade, the genre had begun to interact with the United Kingdom's gothic rock scene, leading to the formation of English deathrock bands like Sex Gang Children and Alien Sex Fiend. However, soon after the genre declined in popularity, and its name largely fell out of use. Horror Punk
Horror punk is a music genre that mixes punk rock and 1950s-influenced doo-wop and rockabilly sounds with morbid and violent imagery and lyrics which are often influenced by horror films and science fiction B-movies. The genre was pioneered by the Misfits (band), Misfits in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Subsequent bands formed in the Misfits' wake like Mourning Noise, the Undead and Samhain (band), Samhain, solidifying horror punk's first wave. In the late 1990s and early 2000s the genre gained attention through the reunion of the Misfits and success of groups like AFI (band), AFI, Son of Sam (band), Son of Sam and the Murderdolls. Glenn Danzig
Glenn Allen Anzalone (born June 23, 1955), better known by his stage name Glenn Danzig, is an American singer, songwriter, musician, actor, film director and record producer. He is the founder of the rock bands Misfits, Samhain, and Danzig. He owns the Evilive record label as well as Verotik, an adult-oriented comic book publishing company. Beginning in the mid-1970s, Danzig's musical career has encompassed a number of genres through the years, including punk rock and heavy metal, and incorporating influences from industrial, blues and classical music. He has also written songs for other musicians, most notably Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison. The self-titled box set of American deathrock band Samhain (band), Samhain was released in 2000, more than 13 years after the band effectively ceased recording and performing. The set's five CDs and one VHS tape compile nearly all of the band's original catalog, newly remastered from the original master tapes, as well as previously unreleased material, the latter of which includes a live CD and a VHS video cassette of live footage. Of Samhain's previous official releases, only the original mix of the Unholy Passion, ''Unholy Passion'' EP was not included in the boxed set; conjecture is that the original master tapes had been lost over the years, or were erased when Danzig re-recorded the guitar and some vocal tracks to those songs in June 1987 for eventual release as side B of the original ''Final Descent (album), Final Descent''. Danceteria
Danceteria was a nightclub that operated in New York City from May 1980 until 1986 and in the Hamptons until 1995. The club operated in various locations over the years, a total of three in New York City and four in the Hamptons. The most famous location was the second, a four-floor venue at 30 West 21st Street in Manhattan that served as the location for the disco scene in the film '' Desperately Seeking Susan''. Cabaret Metro
Metro (formerly the Stages Music Hall and Cabaret Metro) is a concert hall in Chicago, Illinois, United States, that plays host to a variety of local, regional and national emerging bands and musicians. The Metro was first opened in 1982. The capacity is 1,100, divided between the main floor and the balcony. The building housing Metro also houses Smart Bar underneath the main venue. Eerie Von (born Eric Stellmann; August 25, 1964) is an American musician and photographer best known as the original bassist for the Heavy metal music, heavy metal band Danzig (band), Danzig. His preferred bass is the Fender Jazz Bass. Early life Eerie Von was raised in Lodi, New Jersey. As a child he gained an interest in drawing and art. He grew up listening mostly to Elvis Presley and 50s rock and roll music. Eerie Von began playing the drums and taking lessons at 8 years old. He attended Lodi High School (New Jersey), Lodi High School with future Misfits (band), Misfits guitarist Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein, Doyle, who introduced Eerie Von to the punk rock music of the Misfits. Steve Zing
Steve Zing (born Steven Paul Grecco; June 29, 1964) is an American drummer and bassist. He has performed with Implosion, Mourning Noise, and The Undead before joining Samhain. He graduated in 1982 from Lodi High School in Lodi, New Jersey together with Eerie Von and Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein. Zing left Samhain in July 1985 shortly after the '' Unholy Passion'' EP was released. He was replaced by London May and returned briefly to The Undead in 1986. He later formed Chyna and played briefly for Rubella Umbrella in 1996. In 1999, Zing returned to Samhain for the reunion tour, playing the first half of the show on drums, and the second on bass. He later recorded with Son of Sam, which included AFI vocalist Davey Havok, then- Danzig guitarist Todd Youth and former Samhain and Tiger Army drummer London May.
