Sam Carter (athlete)
Samuel Harrison Carter (born 6 August 1991) is a Paralympic athlete, who competes in 100m, 200m, 400m and 1500m T54 events. He has represented Australia at the 2016 Rio Paralympics and 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, as well as at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games. Personal Carter was born on 6 August 1991 in Toowoomba, Queensland with spina bifida. He attended Harristown State High School in Queensland. Before becoming a wheelchair racer, he was actively engaged in sport, in particular swimming and wheelchair basketball. In 2001, Carter attended a sports day held by Queensland Sporting Wheelies aimed at increasing the participation of disabled kids in sport, where he met Paralympian Geoff Trappett, who had won gold in the Men's T54 100m at the 2000 Sydney Paralympic Games and encouraged Carter to become involved in wheelchair racing. Sporting Wheelies And Disabled Association
The Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Association was the peak body for sport, recreation and fitness for people with a physical disability or vision impairment in the Australian state of Queensland. In January 2024, all the staff, assets and liabilities of the association were to be transitioned to Spinal Life Australia, with the words 'Sporting Wheelies' only retained as a business name. The not-for-profit organisation's mission was 'to enhance the lives of people with a disability through community engagement and education, sport and healthy activity', and was changed after 2019 to 'Engage, empower and develop people with a disability to live a more healthy, active and fulfilled life of their choosing'. 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships
The 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships was held in Christchurch, New Zealand from January 21 to 30, 2011. Athletes with disabilities competed, and the Championships were a qualifying event for the London 2012 Paralympic Games. Over 1,000 athletes competed, including Oscar Pistorius (nicknamed the "Blade Runner), who competed in class T44 at the 100m, 4 × 100 m relay, 200m, and 400m events. A warm-up meet, with free entry for the audience, was held on Friday January 14. Estimates placed the total visitor spending in the city at around $12 million. Venue The championship was staged in the 20,000-seat Queen Elizabeth II Park stadium that was built in 1973 for the 1974 British Commonwealth Games. Marcel Hug
Marcel Eric Hug (; born 16 January 1986) is a Paralympic Games, Paralympic Track and field, athlete from Switzerland competing in category T54 (classification), T54 wheelchair racing events. Hug, nicknamed 'The Silver Bullet', has competed in four Summer Paralympic Games for Switzerland, winning two bronze medals in his first Games in Athens in 2004. In 2010 he set four world records in four days, and at the 2011 World Championships he won a gold in the 10,000 metres and four silver medals, losing the gold in three events to long term rival David Weir (athlete), David Weir. David Weir (wheelchair Athlete)
David Russell Weir (born 5 June 1979) is a British Paralympic wheelchair athlete. He has won a total of six gold medals at the 2008 and 2012 Paralympic Games, and has won the London Marathon on eight occasions. He was born with a spinal cord transection that left him unable to use his legs. Personal life Weir was born in Wallington, part of the London Borough of Sutton. He cannot use his legs due to a congenital spinal cord transection. As a child he was a talented wheelchair athlete, representing Sutton in wheelchair athletics at the London Youth Games, and won the junior event at the London marathon (the mini wheelchair race) seven times.
