Sam (ugly Dog)
Sam (November 7, 1990 – November 18, 2005) was a blind, pure-bred Chinese Crested dog, and three-time champion of the annual Sonoma-Marin Fair World's Ugliest Dog Contest in Northern California in 2003–2005. His ugliness earned him international fame. His owner, Santa Barbara resident Susie Lockheed, took him in as a rescue dog in 1999 from his first owner. In 2005, Sam starred on Criss Angel's 2005 ''Mindfreak'' Halloween Special, which aired on the A&E Network. Sam played the role of Angel's cat, dressed up in a Halloween costume. Sam was featured on Japanese television, New Zealand radio and the ''Daily Telegraph'' in England. Due to heart complications, Sam was euthanized on November 18, 2005, just 11 days after his 15th birthday. The Chinese Crested Dog is a hairless breed of dog. Like most hairless dog breeds, the Chinese Crested Dog comes in two varieties, without hair and with hair, which can be born in the same litter: the hairless and the powderpuff. Description The Chinese Crested is considered an extra small breed, weighing on average . The height is 11 to 13 inches (27–33 cm). The breed is fine-boned, with almond-shaped eyes and large, erect ears. There is no color standard for the breed. At first look, the hairless and powderpuff varieties of Chinese Crested Dogs appear to be two different breeds, but hairlessness is an incomplete dominant trait within a single breed. World's Ugliest Dog Contest
The World's Ugliest Dog Contest is an annual contest held in Petaluma, California, as part of the Sonoma-Marin Fair, to decide which of the dogs entered in the contest is the ugliest. The contest, along with the rest of the fair, is typically scheduled for the fourth week of June. Elwood (dog)
Elwood (2005 – November 28, 2013) was the 2007 winner of the World's Ugliest Dog Contest. In the prior year, 2006, he came in second in the contest. His owner was Karen Quigley, a resident of Sewell, New Jersey. He was a two-year-old Chinese Crested/ chihuahua mixed breed. Elwood died on November 28, 2013. He was eight years old.
