Vladimir Viktorovich Sakharov (; 20 May 1853 – August 1920) was a Russian general of the cavalry who served in the Russian Imperial Army. In his army career from 1869 to 1917, he served in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, the Russo-Japanese War, and World War I. Biography Early life Sakharov was a descendant of the nobility of the Moscow Governorate and was a member of the Russian Orthodox Church. In 1869 he graduated from the Second Moscow Cadet Corps. Military career Sakharov entered the Imperial Russian Army on 10 August 1869. He graduated from the 1st Military Pavlovsk School in 1871 and was promoted to ''podporuchik'' (ensign) on 11 August 1871. He was seconded to the Life Guards Grenadier Regiment and became Warrant Officer of the Guard on 17 August 1872. The Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, commonly known as the Sakharov Prize, is an honorary award for individuals or groups who have dedicated their lives to the defence of human rights and freedom of thought. ''Sakharov'' is a 1984 American drama film directed by Jack Gold and written by David W. Rintels. The film stars Jason Robards, Glenda Jackson, Nicol Williamson, Frank Finlay, Michael Bryant and Paul Freeman. The film premiered on HBO on June 20, 1984. Plot The film is the story of the later life of the Russian nuclear scientist Andrei Sakharov, played by Jason Robards. 1979 Sakharov, provisionally designated , is a stony Vestian asteroid from the inner regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 4.5 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered during the Palomar–Leiden survey in 1960, and named after Russian physicist Andrei Sakharov. Discovery ''Sakharov'' was discovered on 24 September 1960, by the Dutch astronomers Ingrid and Cornelis van Houten, on photographic plates taken by Dutch–American astronomer Tom Gehrels at the U.S. Palomar Observatory in California. Survey designation The survey designation "P-L" stands for ''Palomar–Leiden'', named after Palomar Observatory and Leiden Observatory, which collaborated on the fruitful Palomar–Leiden survey in the 1960s. Tatiana Anatolyevna Sakharova (; 16 June 1973 – 4 June 2025) was a Russian politician serving as a senator from Murmansk Oblast from 7 October 2021 until her death on 4 June 2025. Julia Sakharova () is a professional violinist. A native of Zheleznovodsk, Russia, she debuted at the age of eight with the Moldavian Symphony Orchestra. Her mother is also a musician. By the age of 11, she was already internationally known as a child prodigy due to her skills on the violin. At the age of 15, she won the top prize in the International Competition for Music of Eastern and Central Europe; Vladimir Spivakov, the head of the jury, presented her with his bow in addition to the prize. Yuri Nikolaevich Sakharov (; 18 September 1922 – 26 September 1981) was a Ukrainian Chess Master (1958), International Correspondence Chess Master (1971), and Merited Coach of the Ukrainian SSR (1963). Vladimir Vladimirovich Sakharov (28 February 1902 – 9 January 1969) was a Soviet cytogeneticist who studied mutagenesis by radiation with applications to agricultural and human genetics. He was a professor at the K. A. Timiriazev Agricultural Academy. Sakharov was born Simbirsk to agronomist Vladimir and teacher Maria Antonovna Ponyatovskaya, daughter of a Moscow physician.
