Saint Joseph's Catholic Church (Key West, Iowa)
Saint Joseph's Catholic Church is a Roman Catholic parish located south of Dubuque, Iowa in the community of Key West, Iowa. The parish is part of the Archdiocese of Dubuque. The church is across from Mount Olivet Cemetery, one of two main Catholic cemeteries for Dubuque-area Catholics. While people from St. Joseph's parish are often buried at Mount Olivet, the cemetery is not part of the parish. History The parish was originally established in 1872 by Father Thomas J. O'Reilly for the Catholics living just south of Dubuque in Mosalem and Table Mound townships. Father James Ward was the first resident pastor. In the late 1940s another Saint Joseph's Church was established about three miles away in Dubuque. This led to confusion on the part of people between the two parishes; at times one parish would receive mail meant for the other. Mount Olivet Cemetery (Dubuque)
Mount Olivet Cemetery is a Catholic cemetery located at 10378 Military Road in Key West, Iowa approximately south of Dubuque. It is one of the two large Catholic cemeteries located in the Dubuque area. The cemetery is located near Saint Joseph's Catholic Church in Key West, but is operated independently. The cemetery offers in-ground burial, as well as columbarium and mausoleum entombment. History The cemetery began in 1856 and was known as the ''Key West Burying Ground''. In 1901, the Mt. Olivet Cemetery Association was formed and the cemetery was renamed Mount Olivet. Though a newspaper article from 1901 indicates that the board of 11 trustees planned to relocate graves from the Third Street Cemetery, adjacent to St. Raphael's Cathedral (Dubuque, Iowa), to Mt. Olivet, there is no record that these disinterments ever took place. Saint Joseph the Worker Catholic Church is a Catholic parish located in Dubuque, Iowa. It is part of the Archdiocese of Dubuque. The parish became the tenth Catholic parish in Dubuque when it was created in 1949 by Archbishop Rohlman. The current pastor of the parish is Father Jim Goerend. Prior to the construction of the first church, the parish offices were located at Mercy Hospital. Weekend masses were held at Washington Junior High School. Eventually a parish church was built at the current location at 90 S. Algona, Dubuque. In the late 1960s, a new parish church was built. This new church building was a departure from the traditional church buildings of the past. The church was a circular structure where the congregation sat in a semicircle around the altar.
