Sailing At The 2000 Summer Olympics – Laser
The Laser (dinghy), Open Single Person Dinghy at the 2000 Summer Olympics was held from 20 to 29 September 2000 in Sydney in Australia. Points were awarded for placement in each race. Eleven races were scheduled and sailed. Each sailor had two discards. Results Notes Points are assigned based on the finishing position in each race (1 for first, 2 for second, etc.). The points are totalled from the top 9 results of the 11 races, with lower totals being better. If a sailor was disqualified or did not complete the race, 44 points are assigned for that race (as there were 43 sailors in this competition). Scoring abbreviations are defined as follows: *OCS – On course side of the starting line *DSQ – Disqualified *DNF – Did Not Finish *DNS – Did Not Start *RDG – Redress Given References Sources

Laser (dinghy)
The Laser is a class of Single-handed sailing, single-handed, one-design dinghy sailing, sailing dinghies using a common hull design with three interchangeable rigs of different sail areas, appropriate to a given combination of wind strength and crew weight. Ian Bruce (sailor), Ian Bruce and Bruce Kirby (yachts), Bruce Kirby designed the Laser in 1970 with an emphasis on simplicity and performance. The Laser is a widely produced class of dinghies. As of 2018, there were more than 215,000 boats worldwide. It is an international class with sailors in 120 countries, and an Olympic class since 1996. Its wide acceptance is attributable to its robust construction, simple rig and ease of sailing that offer competitive racing due to tight class association controls which eliminate differences in hull, sails, and equipment. Gareth Blanckenberg
Gareth Blanckenberg (born 3 June 1980, in Durban) is a retired South African sailor, who specialized in the Laser class. He obtained top twenty finishes on his respective category in two editions of the Olympic Games (2000 and 2004), and has also been training throughout most of his sailing career for Imperial Yacht Club in Cape Town, under his Irish-born personal coach Trevor Millar. Blanckenberg made his official debut at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, where he competed in the Laser class. Sailing through the eleven-race series, he scored a career best result in the fifth heat with a momentous lead over a vast fleet of forty-three sailors, but dropped shortly to ninth in the medal round with a net score of 92. Kevin Lim (sailor)
Kevin Lim Leong Keat (born 27 September 1976) is a Malaysian former sailor, who specialized in the Laser class. He bagged two silver medals at the Asian Games (1998 and 2002) and became the first-ever Malaysian athlete in history to compete in four editions of the Summer Olympic Games (1996, 2000, 2004, and 2008). Before retiring from the sport in late 2008, Lim trained most of his career at the Woollahra Sailing Club in Sydney, Australia. Lim became the first Malaysian sailor to compete at the Olympics, making his debut as a 20-year-old in Atlanta 1996. There, he finished thirty-eighth overall in the inaugural Laser class with a net grade of 300. Vasilij Žbogar (born 4 October 1975), is a Slovenian sailor. He was born in Koper. Žbogar competed in the 2004 Summer Olympics, where he won a bronze medal and in the 2008 Summer Olympics, where he won a silver medal, both of them in laser class. Philippe Bergmans (born 2 May 1974) is a Belgian former sailor, who specialized in the Laser class. He won a gold medal at the 2004 European Laser Championships in Warnemünde, Germany, and was selected to compete for Belgium in three editions of the Olympic Games (1996, 2000, and 2004). Before his retirement came at the end of 2004 season, Bergman trained for the Royal Belgian Sailing Club, under the tutelage of head coach Filip Willems. Bergmans made his Olympic debut in Atlanta 1996, finishing eighteenth overall in the inaugural Laser class with a satisfying net grade of 144.
