Sahadi's
Sahadi's is a shop in Brooklyn, a borough of New York City in the U.S. state of New York. The business was established in Manhattan in the 1890s, and relocated to Brooklyn in 1941. In 2017, Sahadi's was named one of "America's Classics" by the James Beard Foundation Awards. According to their website, the shop was first founded in mid-1890s, in Manhatten's Little Syria neighborhood, by Lebanese immigrants. According to an article written by the New York Times a few years later, it sold: wines and liqueurs, embroidered goods, water pipes, lamps, glass bracelets, and groceries. Christine Sahadi Whelan, one of the current operators of the shop, has written an award-winning cookbook, ''Flavors of the Sun.'' Since 1998, the James Beard Foundation has awarded the title of America's Classics to multiple restaurants. The award focuses on family-owned restaurants across the country that have been operating for at least a decade. According to the ''Washington Post'' the awards are given to restaurants “with timeless appeal, each beloved in its region for quality food that reflects the character of its community.” The James Beard Foundation Awards have been likened to the Oscars of the food world due to its prestige and recognition. NPR described this award category "sneakily subversive". In the early years of the award, the focus was primarily on restaurants that served cuisines familiar to most Americans. However, in the late 2010s, the award began to include restaurants representing cuisines that were not traditionally considered part of the typical American diet. James Beard Foundation Award
The James Beard Foundation Awards are annual awards presented by the James Beard Foundation to recognize chefs, restaurateurs, authors and journalists in the United States. They are scheduled around James Beard's May 5 birthday. The media awards are presented at a dinner in New York City; the chef and restaurant awards were also presented in New York until 2015, when the foundation's annual gala moved to Chicago. Chicago will continue to host the Awards until 2027.
