Russian Rock
Rock music became known in the Soviet Union in the 1960s and quickly broke free from its Western roots. According to many music critics, its "golden age" years were the 1980s (especially the era of perestroika), when the Soviet underground rock bands became able to release their records officially. Since then, Russia and Russophone artists in various other countries have developed a varied rock scene that covers virtually all rock genres, from classic and alternative rock to punk and heavy metal. The majority of the Russian bands perform in the Russian language. According to various polls, the most popular Russian rock bands include Kino, Aquarium, Aria, Alisa, Agatha Christie, and DDT. Nashestvie 2008
Nashestvie (russian: Нашествие) was the largest open-air festival of Russian rock, organized by Nashe Radio station. It was held annually during the first weekend of July (first weekend of August until 2006) in the environs of Moscow, Russia, since 1999 and has been open air since 2000. Nashestvie has changed its venue several times: it was initially held in Ramenskoye, Moscow Oblast, but recently it moved northwest to Tver Oblast. It was held each year since then until 2019 (except in 2007, when an unofficial replacement festval was held instead). Since 2020 Nashestvie is being regularly banned by the Russian authorities. The festival's name is a word play in Russian: it literally means "invasion", but is also derived from the name of Nashe Radio (Our Radio). Melodiya
Melodiya ( rus, links=no, Мелодия, t=Melody) is a Russian (formerly Soviet) record label. It was the state-owned major record company of the Soviet Union. History Melodiya was established in 1964 as the "All-Union Gramophone Record Firm of the USSR Ministry of Culture Melodiya". It utilized numerous recording studios and manufacturing facilities throughout the USSR as well as powerful centres of distribution and promotional strategies. The best selling format at the time was 33⅓ and 78 rpm vinyl records. Pesnyary
Pesniary (also spelled Pesnyary, be, Песняры, ) was a popular Soviet Belarusian folk rock VIA. It was founded in 1969 by guitarist Vladimir Mulyavin. Before 1970, the band was known under the name Liavony (Лявоны). Style Pesniary combined various types of music, but mostly Belarusian folklore though often with various rock elements and later rock as well. Several of Pesniary's songs were composed by Aleksandra Pakhmutova. The surprising influence of early Frank Zappa was also notable. Biography Pesniary was one of the very few Soviet bands (and possibly the first one) to tour in America in 1976. They toured the American South with folk band The New Christy Minstrels. An aquarium (plural: ''aquariums'' or ''aquaria'') is a vivarium of any size having at least one transparent side in which aquatic plants or animals are kept and displayed. Fishkeepers use aquaria to keep fish, invertebrates, amphibians, aquatic reptiles, such as turtles, and aquatic plants. Sokol (Soviet Band)
Sokol (Falcon, Russian: Сокол) is the first russian rock band, the “legend” of Russian rock. History The band was formed at the end of 1964 in Moscow on the initiative of the guitarist Yuri Ermakov. The band also included Igor Goncharuk, Vyacheslav Chernysh, Sergey Timashev. The first administrator of the group was Yuri Aizenshpis. The name is associated with the Moscow region Sokol, where the band members lived. Like all early Soviet bands, the Sokol's repertoire was based on the works of Western rock and pop stars: Elvis Presley, Bill Haley, the Beatles. However, Ermakov and Goncharuk became the authors of the first rock song written in Russian ("Где тот край", 1965). Krugosvet is a Russian-language encyclopedia covering different fields of knowledge in eight supercategories and 27 subcategories, 12,000 entries, over 600 current and historic maps, and 10,000 illustrations and charts. Deep Purple are an English rock band formed in London in 1968. They are considered to be among the pioneers of heavy metal and modern hard rock music, but their musical style has changed over the course of its existence. Bulat Shalvovich Okudzhava (russian: link=no, Булат Шалвович Окуджава; ka, ბულატ ოკუჯავა; hy, Բուլատ Օկուջավա; May 9, 1924 – June 12, 1997) was a Soviet and Russian poet, writer, musician, novelist, and singer-songwriter of Georgian-Armenian ancestry. He was one of the founders of the Soviet genre called " author song" (''авторская песня'', ''avtorskaya pesnya''), or "guitar song", and the author of about 200 songs, set to his own poetry. His songs are a mixture of Russian poetic and folk song traditions and the French ''chansonnier'' style represented by such contemporaries of Okudzhava as Georges Brassens.
