The Multnomah County Circuit Court, which composes the 4th Judicial District of the Oregon Circuit Court system, is the general jurisdiction trial court of Multnomah County, Oregon. Judith Matarazzo is the presiding judge of the Court, serving with 37 others. The chief prosecutor is Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt. Mike Schrunk
Michael D. Schrunk (1942 – January 30, 2023) was an American attorney who served as district attorney of Multnomah County, Oregon, United States from 1981 until 2012. He is believed to have been the longest-serving district attorney in the state of Oregon. In 1981, after eight narcotics officers of the Portland Police Bureau were implicated for misconduct, Schrunk, sought pardons from the governor for 58 people convicted. In 1985, a Portland police officer killed Lloyd Stevenson, a black man, using a chokehold. It was ruled a homicide while under Schrunk's investigation, but a grand jury convened by Schrunk declined to indict either of the officers involved, citing the wording used in the homicide ruling as insufficiently definitive. Simultaneous with Stevenson's funeral, two officers sold T-shirts to fellow officers that read "Don't Choke Em, Smoke Em". The two officers were fired, but later reinstated by a union arbitrator. Mike Schmidt (lawyer)
Michael Schmidt is an American attorney and prosecutor. He has served as the Multnomah County District Attorney since August 2020. Originally set to begin his term on January 1, 2021, Governor Kate Brown appointed him to the job early, in August of 2020, to replace Rod Underhill, who retired in July. Career Early career Schmidt graduated from Vassar College with a BA in Political Science in 2003. He then worked for two years in New Orleans for Teach For America, teaching social studies and coaching basketball. He then attended Lewis & Clark College, graduating with his Juris Doctor in 2008. He then became a Deputy District Attorney in Multnomah County, Oregon, for six years, first under Mike Schrunk, who was the lead DA for 32 years. George Floyd Protests In Portland, Oregon
Starting in May 2020, demonstrations over the police murder of George Floyd were held in the city of Portland, Oregon, concurrent with protests in other cities in the United States and around the world. By July 2020, many of the protests, which had been held every day since May 28, drew more than 1,000 participants. Protests continued into August, September, and October 2020, often drawing hundreds. As of July 2020, the majority of the protests in Portland were peaceful, but many demonstrations have involved rioting, heated confrontations with law enforcement and counter-protesters, and use of tear gas and other weapons. There have been numerous instances of arson, looting, vandalism, and injuries during nighttime protests. One person was shot and killed in the aftermath of a clash between protesters and counter-protesters.
