River Leven, Dunbartonshire
The River Leven () is a stretch of water in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland, flowing from Loch Lomond in the north to the River Clyde in the south. The river is about long. It is very popular with salmon and sea trout anglers, trying to catch one of these migratory fish going up to Loch Lomond. The Vale of Leven is a collection of communities in the northern part of the river, whilst the town of Dumbarton sits at the southern end. Dumbarton Castle sits at the confluence of the river with the Clyde. The Leven is a relatively short river but is widely claimed to be the second fastest flowing river in Scotland, after the River Spey. Possibly because of this, or possibly because it passes through a built-up area, it has a reputation as a dangerous river with many drownings over the years. Balloch, West Dunbartonshire
Balloch ( , ; ) is a village in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland, at the foot of Loch Lomond. Etymology Balloch comes from either the Gaelic word ''baile'' that means village or hamlet, or the Gaelic ''bealach'' meaning "a pass". Using the former derivation, Balloch means "village on the loch", i.e. the nearby Loch Lomond, but this would be Baile Loch. Geography Balloch is at the north end of the Vale of Leven, straddling the River Leven, Dunbartonshire, River Leven itself. It connects to the larger town of Alexandria, Scotland, Alexandria and to the smaller village of Jamestown, Dunbartonshire, Jamestown, both of which are located to its south. The Vale of Leven () is an area of West Dunbartonshire, Scotland, in the valley of the River Leven, Dunbartonshire, River Leven. Historically, it was part of The Lennox, the name of which derives from the Gaelic term ''Leamhnach'', meaning ''field of the Leven''. ''Leamnha'' is thought to mean elm-water. Geographically the valley of the Vale of Leven runs from Loch Lomond in the north to Dumbarton in the south. However, the term "Vale of Leven" or just "The Vale" is commonly used locally to refer to the urban area towards the north of the valley that consists of a number of communities. These were historically separate villages but have expanded into one conurbation. William Denny and Brothers Limited, often referred to simply as Denny, was a Scotland, Scottish shipbuilder, shipbuilding company. History The shipbuilding interests of the Denny family date back to William Denny (born 1779), for whom ships are recorded being built in Dumbarton as far back as 1811 such as the sailing sloop ''Alpha''.
