Register Of The Treasury
The Register of the Treasury was an officer of the United States Treasury Department. In 1919, the office of the Register became the Public Debt Service which, in 1940, became the Bureau of the Public Debt. The Register's duties included filing the accounting records of the government, transferring and cancelling federal debt securities, and filing the certificates of US-registered ships. The signature of the Register of the Treasury was found on almost all United States currency until 1923, along with that of the Treasurer of the United States. Four of the five African Americans whose signatures have appeared on U.S. currency were Registers of the Treasury (Blanche Bruce, Blanche K. Bruce, Judson Whitlocke Lyons, Judson W. Houston Benge Teehee
Houston Benge Teehee (sometimes spelled Tehee) (October 14 or 31, 1874 – November 19, 1953) was an American lawyer and politician from Oklahoma most known for serving as Register of the Treasury from 1915 to 1919. Teehee was from a prominent Cherokee family, with his father serving in all three branches of the Cherokee Nation's government. Before and after statehood, he was elected to positions in city government in Tahlequah, Oklahoma between 1902 and 1910 when he was elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives, where he would serve two terms. After serving as Register of the Treasury he returned to Oklahoma and continued to practice law, until he was appointed assistant attorney general in 1926; in 1927, he was appointed to the Oklahoma Supreme Court Commission. J. Fount Tillman (1854 – March 1899) was an American politician who was the eighth Register of the Treasury, serving during the second term of President Grover Cleveland. As Register of the Treasury, Tillman's signature appeared on US currency issued between July 1, 1893, and December 2, 1897. Prior to working for the Treasury, Tillman served one term in the Tennessee State Legislature. He also served as the Secretary of the National Farmers' Alliance. William Starke Rosecrans (September 6, 1819March 11, 1898) was an American inventor, coal-oil company executive, diplomat, politician, and U.S. Army officer. He gained fame for his role as a Union general during the American Civil War. He was the victor at prominent Western Theater battles, but his military career was effectively ended following his disastrous defeat at the Battle of Chickamauga in 1863. John Allison (August 5, 1812 – March 23, 1878) was an American politician, most notably serving in the U.S. House as a Representative of Pennsylvania during the 1850s. Allison was born in Beaver, Pennsylvania and grew up to study law. He was the son of James Allison, Jr. He was admitted to the bar, but did not practice, instead establishing a hat factory.
