"Ready or Not" is a song by the American hip-hop group Fugees, from their second studio album, '' The Score'' (1996). The song contains a sample of "Boadicea" (1987) by Irish singer Enya, and its chorus is based on "Ready or Not Here I Come (Can't Hide from Love)" by the Delfonics. "Ready or Not" topped the charts in Iceland and the United Kingdom; in the latter country, "Ready or Not" became the Fugees' second chart-topping song on the UK Singles Chart, following " Killing Me Softly"; and became one of the best-selling songs of 1996 in the region. The single has been certified Platinum in the UK and in the United States. The accompanying music video was directed by film director Marcus Nispel, and was reported to have cost approximately 1.3 million dollars at the time, making it one of the most expensive music videos ever. Deriving its name from a shortening of the word "refugees", the group consists of Wyclef Jean, Pras Michel, and Lauryn Hill. Gangsta rap or gangster rap, initially called reality rap, emerged in the mid- to late 1980s as a controversial hip-hop subgenre whose lyrics assert the culture and values typical of American street gangs and street hustlers. Marcus Nispel is a German film director and producer, Fulbright Scholar, best known for several high-profile American remakes such as '' The Texas Chainsaw Massacre'', as well as an extensive career in television commercials and music videos.
