Rømer's Determination Of The Speed Of Light
Rømer's determination of the speed of light was the demonstration in 1676 that light has an apprehensible, measurable speed and so does not travel instantaneously. The discovery is usually attributed to Danish astronomer Ole Rømer,There are several alternative spellings of Rømer's surname, including "Roemer", "Rœmer", and "Römer". The Danish "Ole" is sometimes latinized to "Olaus". who was working at the Royal Observatory in Paris at the time. By timing the eclipses of Jupiter's moon Io, Rømer estimated that light would take about 22 minutes to travel a distance equal to the diameter of Earth's orbit around the Sun. Using modern orbits, this would imply a speed of light of 226,663 kilometres per second, 24.4% lower than the true value of 299,792 km/s. Ole Rømer
Ole Christensen Rømer (; 25 September 1644 – 19 September 1710) was a Danes, Danish astronomer who, in 1676, first demonstrated that light travels at a finite speed. Rømer also invented the modern thermometer showing the temperature between two fixed points, namely the points at which water respectively boils and freezes. Rømer made his discovery regarding the speed of light while working at the Paris Observatory, Royal Observatory in Paris and studying Jupiter's moon Io (moon), Io. He estimated that light takes about 11 minutes to travel from the Sun to Earth. Using today's knowledge of the Astronomical unit, Sun-Earth distance, this would amount to a speed of light of approximately 220,000 kilometers per second, compared to today's accepted value of just under 300,000 kilometers per second. Uraniborg
Uraniborg was an astronomical observatory and alchemy laboratory established and operated by the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe. It was the first custom-built observatory in modern Europe, and the last to be built without a telescope as its primary instrument. Uraniborg was built on Ven, an island in the Øresund between Zealand and Scania, Sweden, which was part of Denmark at the time. It was expanded with the underground facility Stjerneborg () on an adjacent site. Jean Picard (21 July 1620 – 12 July 1682) was a French astronomer and priest born in La Flèche, where he studied at the Jesuit Collège Royal Henry-Le-Grand. He is principally notable for his accurate measure of the size of the Earth, based on a careful survey of one degree of latitude along the Paris Meridian.
